The Assistant Head of Middle School will join Out-of-Door during an important period of growth and development. The Middle School is growing in enrollment, as well as square footage and is implementing richer, student-centered learning experiences. The next Assistant Head of Middle School will partner with the Head of Middle School to strategically align innovative practices, integrate courses, reimagine curriculum, and inspire faculty.
Like all Out-of-Door faculty members, the successful candidate should expect to develop healthy and lasting relationships with students, inspire them to reach their full academic and personal potential, live the school’s mission and core values on a daily basis, and contribute to the broader life of the school community, including advising, coaching, and leading extra-curricular activities.
Reporting to the Head of Middle School, the Assistant Head of Middle School will be responsible for the following:
Collaborate with the Head of Middle School and faculty to develop and cultivate varied student learning experiences, curriculum and assessment practices.
Provide structure to advisory and clubs programs to serve the school’s mission.
Oversee student support and student decorum and articulate clear expectations with faculty, students, and parents with empathy for those engaged with this dynamic age group.
Assist with course scheduling.
Partner with parents to ensure individual educational goals are attained.
Promote a growth mindset regarding best practices and important trends in curriculum, pedagogy, educational technology, and co-curriculars.
Live the school’s mission and core values of respect, integrity, service, excellence, and responsibility.
A professional educator who leads by virtue of being an active and engaged presence in the daily life of the division and whose style is rooted in transparency, honest communication, and collaboration.

Minimum of five years of experience in teaching and/or administrative roles; independent middle school experience preferred.
Proficient in the development of curriculum, arts and athletic offerings, and extracurricular activities.
A successful track record of working effectively with a wide range of constituencies including students, faculty, staff, and parents, and alumni.
A broad and deep knowledge of traditional and emerging curricular and pedagogical trends, current thinking about best practices in teaching and learning, and the use of technology to enhance the student experience.

Out-of-Door was founded on Siesta Key in 1924 to serve students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. In 1996, a second campus in the Lakewood Ranch area of Sarasota was acquired to accommodate the addition of an upper school. Over the past ten years, t...he school has experienced steady and impressive enrollment growth from 550 to 740 students. The campuses have also evolved and developed in response to this growth. Today, the five-acre Siesta Key campus is home to the Lower School (PK-5), and the 85-acre Uihlein Campus in Lakewood Ranch houses both the Middle and Upper Schools. Facilities include interactive technology in every classroom, a fine and performing arts center with a black box theater, a student and STEM Center, a full-size gymnasium with a wellness center, a lighted stadium, tennis courts and both competition and practice fields.
