We are looking for a dynamic individual to join our experienced, vibrant, and team-oriented College Counseling department. We are open to the potential incoming level of this person (Assistant Director; Associate Director); the ideal candidate will be interested in building relationships with students, families, faculty members, college representatives, and community partners. The right person will also embrace Cannon School’s mission and contribute to a team that views the college process as one step on a personal journey of growth.
At Cannon School, college counselors meet with students as early as the freshman year with the purpose of getting to know our advisees and helping them develop self-awareness. This early pairing and our alignment with advisory Houses allows the college counselors to work in tandem with grade-level deans and progress with our advisees throughout their time in the Upper School.
We will begin reviewing applications in early January, with the goal of bringing finalists to campus in mid to late February. We understand that most candidates may not be able to begin until June or July 2019, but we welcome an earlier start if possible. We value the opportunity for the incoming person to become known on campus and to begin investing in relationships before the next school year starts. #youbelonghere
A bachelor’s degree is required; a master’s degree is preferred. Successful candidates will have strong working knowledge of the college admission process. Compelling candidates will have 3-5 years’ experience in selective university or college admissions and have engaged frequently with students as part of this work OR have prior work advising students in an independent school environment. Particular experience in college counseling would be a plus.
The position demands strong written, in-person, and presentation-style communication skills, as well as a nuanced approach to counseling the teenagers with whom the college counselor would work. We expect anyone joining the team to be interested in ongoing professional development and continued growth in our field and secondary school education more generally. We would love to find a teammate who is also tech-savvy and well-versed in social media. The ideal candidate will thrive working both independently and in tight collaboration with a team and will report to the Director of College Counseling. Interested candidates can apply for the position here.
