The Langley School, a preschool-through-eighth grade coeducational day school in McLean, Virginia, seeks a collaborative, passionate, child-centered educator to lead our middle school. By making middle school the culminating stage of a Langley education, we nurture and challenge our younger students while ensuring the critical pre-teen years are not a forgotten step between elementary and high schools. As such, we seek a leader who not only has expertise in middle school curriculum and instruction, but who also has an appreciation of the unique social and emotional development that occurs during these years. As a member of Langley's senior leadership team, the Head of the Middle School reports directly to the Head of School and works closely with the Assistant Head of School and members of the academic leadership team. This is a twelve month position.
The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate his/her ability to perform the following responsibilities:
Communicate effectively about the successes of the Middle School to students, current and prospective parents, the middle school faculty, and the Board of Trustees. The Head of the Middle school, who must be a strong public speaker and writer, will share important information about the division, progress towards the division’s goals, and any major accomplishments.
Develop strong parent relationships through formal and informal conversations about middle level education. The Head of the Middle School should be knowledgeable about current research pertaining to middle level education and will welcome opportunities to convey this message to a variety of constituents.
Lead students and their families through the intricacies of the high school outplacement process with the Dean of Students. Langley has shaped confident, kind, self-aware graduates who are prepared to succeed in the nation’s top high schools and beyond.
Partner with and advise parents as they navigate the complexities of the early adolescent years. Langley parents seek guidance from the Head of the Middle School, along with the Director of Social and Emotional Learning, about what is developmentally appropriate behavior and what behavior may require more attention.
Provide vision and development for the Middle School’s inquiry based curriculum in collaboration with the academic leadership team.
Identify and build on the strengths of a superb faculty to ensure high level instruction for Langley’s students. The Middle School Head will observe and evaluate the middle school faculty and offer recommendations and professional development to strengthen the instructional practices of the faculty.
Create and nurture a strong and positive sense of community among the students, parents, faculty, and leadership in the Middle School. The Middle School Head must lead in a highly collaborative manner that promotes inclusivity, respect, and kindness.
