Brookwood is a PreK-8 independent school of 350 students located on a beautiful 30-acre wooded campus in Manchester, MA on the coast of the North Shore of Boston. Brookwood provides and academically challenging education through a child-centered program focused on building 21st century skills and graduating students of conscience, character, compassion, and cultural competence. Brookwood School is seeking a senior, experienced development professional to provide strategic direction and oversight for a $600k annual fund and future capital. Reporting directly to the Head of School, the Director of Advancement will serve as a critical member of the senior leadership team and work closely with the Board of Trustees and Brookwood's community of faculty, parents, and students. This is an opportunity to join an innovative organization in a leadership position with a lot of room for helping to shape strategic direction for advancement. The successful candidate will oversee all aspects of Brookwood's fundraising, including individual giving, local and national foundations and corporate partnership opportunities.
The Director of Advancement will act as Brookwood's chief fundraiser, developing major-gift proposals and solicitation opportunities for both individuals and institutions, expanding donor stewardship, leading board engagement, and collaborating on all development communications.
Specific responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
Motivating, coaching and managing the Advancement team, employing a coaching mentality to support team members' goal attainment and ongoing professional development
Develop strategic plan for advanced that is integrated with the school's overall strategic plan, ensure strategy is fully implemented and used as a guide for the Advancement program over time;
Prepare annual tactical plans outlining actions in support of fundraising and relationship-building goals, report on program progress, and represent Advancement at Brookwood School before various internal and external audiences;
Create office systems to support all advancement projects and operations;
Oversee Advancement Office operations, including donor files and database, gift accounting and acknowledgment, pledge collection, creation of financial records, media archives, alumni databases, and other records and coordinate development research activities;
In collaboration with the Finance Office, develop institutional policies regarding scholarship, gift fulfillment and donor recognition;
Design communications plan for advancement and work in collaboration with Director of Communications to ensure plan is executed according to scheduled timelines; and
Oversee the creation and supervision of the Advancement Office budget, including approval of contracts and invoices.
Identify Brookwood prospects and develop fundraising strategies that include goal setting, performance metrics and evaluation of the overall effectiveness of the advancement program;
Oversee the cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of principal and leadership donors to Brookwood; ensuring effective stewardship of current donors
Develop and implement a solicitation strategy that includes new prospect identification, cultivation, and stewardship to expand existing donor base;
Manage annual giving, endowment and capital campaigns, special projects, and other school-related solicitations;
Develop a plan and strategy for increasing major gifts, identifying major gift prospects both within and outside of Brookwood's current donor base, and engage in cultivation and stewardship.
Lead efforts for other potential fundraising initiatives, including grant proposals for foundations and corporations when/if appropriate and the development of a planned giving program as needed
Board of Trustees
In collaboration with the Head of School and the Board Chair, manage strategic planning processes for the advancement office;
Work with the Advancement Committee of the Board of Trustees, Board Chair and the Head of School to define fundraising goals;
Develop fundraising training for Trustees and other leadership volunteers as requested;
Participate in board meetings and regularly report on advancement progress; and
Advise the Committee on Trustees with Board recruitment efforts by recommending and researching new potential members and designing and implementing cultivation strategies.
Advancement/Fundraising: Proven success in development in senior leadership level role. Experience running capital campaigns and success fundraising from multiple donor channels with advancement operations best practices. Minimum of 10+ years of major gifts fundraising experience.
Demonstrated success in closing gift solicitations at the five- to seven-figure level.
Skilled manager with ability to supervise staff, set priorities, and work with minimum supervision.
Project Leadership: Experience in planning, leading, and managing development projects, including coordinating with peers to achieve desired outcomes and tracking and reporting on progress to senior managers/board of directors. Demonstrated ability to meet goals on time and handle multiple tasks and projects. Demonstrated success interfacing with board members and volunteers.
Entrepreneurial Spirit: Strong entrepreneurial spirit and ability to thrive in a small shop. Takes initiative and actively seeks to deepen current donor relationships and forge new ones.
Communications: Skilled in creating powerful, compelling written and oral communications for fundraising. Ability to convey complex ideas with effective materials and presentations.
Influencing: Ability to develop creative innovative ideas based on past experience and Brookwood stories; creates a win-win situation for internal and external stakeholders.
Collaboration: Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively, highly effective working with others to reach common goals and objectives.
Relationship Building: Skilled at establishing and cultivating strong relationships with a wide range of stakeholders inside the organization as well as externally.
Additional desired skills and experiences:
Experience working for an independent elementary school a plus, but not a requirement.
Excellent computer skills - proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and Raiser's Edge CMS.
Ability to work occasional night or weekend evenings.
