We are seeking a College Counseling Director who will report directly to the Upper School Director and will be responsible for administering all aspects of the college search and admission process. The Director will be a member of the Senior Leadership Team, Upper School Administrative Team and is responsible for the day to day operations of the Department. The Director’s student case load includes approximately one half of the student body grades 9 through 12 and is a 10-month contract.
Educate, advise and support students and parents as they navigate the college admission process helping them aspire realistically and select the right fit, academically, socially and financially.
Plan and conduct additional events to complement a strategic college counseling vision (case studies, town hall meeting, reverse college fair, financial aid, building a balanced list and application workshops).
Work with International students to understand US college admissions, especially aspects unique to them.
Compile an annual Profile of our school, including grade distributions, test score data and courses offered at our school.
Advocate and guide students through the entire college search and application process.
Provide support to students in writing college essays and completing applications.
Develop and maintain strong relationships with colleges and universities and their representatives.
Coordinate and facilitate a variety of informational programs for students and parents in each grade level of the Upper School. Collaborate with other staff, faculty and administrators to support students.
Conduct individual, family, small group and class-wide meetings related to college.
Maintain and disseminate information regarding standardized tests such as SAT, ACT and PSAT. Help to administer AP and PSAT exams, serving as AP Coordinator and working with school counselor to arrange for extended time on those tests, as warranted.
Coordinate selection of Book Award recipients.
Represent Summit Country Day School at local, regional, state and national conferences and workshops. Visit college campuses individually or on college sponsored trips.
Ensure our College Counseling Handbook is up to date.
Administer the College Counseling Department budget.
Supervise, mentor, coach and evaluate College Counselor and Administrative Assistant.
Perform other duties assigned by the Upper School Director.
The ideal candidate will have a minimum of five years’ experience in selective college admissions or as a college counselor in an independent school or top tier public school. Candidates must show an ongoing commitment to professional development, staying abreast of trends in college counseling, admissions, and be philosophically committed to the values and mission of The Summit Country Day School.
Bachelor’s degree. Master’s degree in High School Counseling or related to School Counseling and Guidance Services preferred.
Broad knowledge of colleges and universities across the country as well as the programs and unique experiences offered.
The ability to work collaboratively with a broad range of people, the Head of School, faculty, and other administrators.
Well versed in the college admission landscape and current trends.
Strong verbal, written, and presentation skills in order to lead communication strategies with students, parents and colleagues.
Proficient in Microsoft Office and Naviance.
Have the highest ethical standards, sound judgement, and high level of confidentiality.
