The Head of the Middle School at The Field School is a member of the Student Guidance team, not a traditional division head. The Head of the Middle School will work in support of the Director of Student Guidance & Growth and the Head of School to ensure a robust middle school program, aligned with the overarching mission, values, and philosophy of The Field School. The Head of the Middle School serves as the leader and coordinator of the middle school Grade Heads, and as a point of contact for parents and teachers with programmatic questions about the middle school. The Head of the Middle School provides leadership in creating a middle school identity and culture at Field that resides within, and is aligned with the overall school culture.
The Head of the Middle School also serves as a Head of the Eighth Grade. Field has a Grade Head at each level from grade six to grade 12. Grade Heads have two essential responsibilities for which they are accountable: 1) the overall academic, social and emotional well-being and growth of each individual student at their grade level (as delivered by teachers, coaches, mentors, etc.) and 2) the creation–in collaboration with teachers and advisors–of a community among the students that is positive and inclusive which fosters each student’s responsibility to one’s self and to others.
Grade Heads work to support individual and collective growth. To those ends, Grade Heads set expectations for behavior and self-efficacy at their grade level, and work with students, teachers, and parents to help students meet those expectations. It is essential that Grade Heads know each student at their grade level and to ensure that each student is known well by one or more adults at the school. Grade Heads utilize their understanding of each individual to help each student meet the expectations of the school or to bring flexibility to those expectations when the Grade Head or the Grade Head’s supervisors deem appropriate.
Grade heads work in close collaboration with the Dean of Community and Culture, the School Psychologist, the Athletic Director, Teachers, mentors and coaches around issues of social climate, community, and student well-being.
If you would like to apply for this position, please fill out the 2019-20 faculty application which can be found on the employment page of Field's website.
