Marvelwood School is seeking candidates for the position of Head of School, beginning in July, 2020.
The Marvelwood School was founded in 1956 to meet the needs of students whose academic success had been mixed but whose personal promise was clear. Marvelwood is today a co-ed, college preparatory secondary school that serves 91 boarding and 28 day students from 15 states and 12 foreign countries. The school’s attractive facilities and beautiful mountaintop campus in scenic northwestern Connecticut are distinct assets.
A Marvelwood education is characterized by intensive personal attention to the individual student within a small, warm, ambitious and explicitly organized community. The design of the school is intended to guide college-bound students in achieving positive intellectual, social, personal and moral growth (the school’s core values are Honesty, Respect for Oneself and One’s Community, Responsibility, and Service to Others). A dedicated, stable and talented faculty of 42 professionals oversees instruction and provides both rigorous academic preparation (numerous AP Classes, many honors level classes, and plentiful electives as well as core academic classes) all featuring active, hands-on learning. There is one-on-one support (“Strategies”) for students who need extra academic help, and an English Language Learners (ELL) program for students whose native language is not English. The student / faculty ratio is 3:1. The school is accredited by NEASC and is a member of NAIS, CAIS, and TABS.
A healthy residential life is an essential component of a Marvelwood education. Marvelwood has strong competitive athletics as well a respected outdoor education program. Campus life is augmented by sophisticated technology, offerings in the arts, abundant activities, and a community service program that is a cornerstone of the school’s identity.
The school’s operating budget is $8 million and endowment is approximately $2.5 million, with another one million per year of endowment funding pledged for each of the coming nine years. Financial aid awards represent 17.5% of the 2018-19 operating budget.
In 2017-18, Annual Giving amounted to $220,000. The current year’s goal is the same. In the summer of 2018, capital gifts enabled the school to completely renovate all four dormitories (a $2 million project). The Board is in the planning stages of a $5 million rebuilding / expansion of the former gymnasium building to become Marvelwood’s Center for the Arts.
