SCH Academy seeks a Long-Term Latin and Prima Lingua Substitute Teacher for students in grades six through ten. The ideal candidate with bring a passionate appreciation for adolescents blended with expertise in the discipline of Classics. This individual will be responsible for preparing and delivering dynamic lessons that covers both linguistic and cultural elements of the course of study.
Teaches Latin grammar, builds reading skills, and facilitates an appreciation for and understanding of the Roman world.
Develops an appreciation for the sound of Latin; reading aloud and reading poetry in meter.
Uses Latin study as a vehicle for the promotion of English and foreign language skills.
Teaches Prima Lingua, an introduction to “the language of language” concentrating on grammatical, cultural, and historical foundations across a variety of languages.
Plans how to deliver course content, creates materials, and employs varied measures of instruction.
Collaborates with Latin teachers to create, support, and maintain parity among parallel courses.
Prepares course materials such as homework assignments, assessments, and projects.
Initiates, facilitates, and moderates classroom activities.
Evaluates and grades students’ class work, assignments, and assessments.
Maintains student attendance records, grades, and written feedback on graded assignments.
Maintains effective contact with students and parents with regular communication and regularly scheduled evaluations.
Keeps abreast of developments in their field by reading current literature, talking with colleagues, and participating in professional development.
Bachelor’s degree or post-graduate work in Latin; master’s degree preferred.
Prior teaching experience preferred, preferably in an independent school environment.
Superior skills in reading Latin and in helping others to develop reading skills.
Demonstrated sensitivity, knowledge, and understanding of the diverse backgrounds of community members with a continuous focus on healthy relationship building.
Demonstrated deep understanding of cultural competency skills and enthusiasm for issues of diversity, inclusivity, and multiculturalism.
Demonstrated enthusiasm for innovative teaching and learning.
Organized, detail oriented, dependable, and capable of taking initiative.
Compassionate and knowledgeable in delivering content to students with diverse learning styles.
Comfortable using technology both in and out of the classroom.

SCH’s educational model is distinguished by single-sex education for the lower grades (Pre-K through 8) followed by a coed Upper School.
