Reports to: Director of Fine Arts (Middle/Upper School Division Heads)
Position Purpose: The Assistant Band Director works with the Middle/Upper School Instrumental Music Teacher to plan and implement a band curriculum that will prepare students in Forms 6-12 to reach their maximum potential in music, in accordance with the educational philosophy of Saint Mary’s Hall.
Responsibilities to the General Community:
To work two to three days a week with Middle and Upper School Band and Upper School Chamber Orchestra students in sectionals
To assist with Upper School Pep Band
To effectively integrate professional standards of music into everyday classroom instruction and curriculum
To work with the Upper School Instrumental Music Teacher on continual refinement and improvement of the music curriculum
To prepare an environment in which the furnishings and materials are complete and correspond to the needs of the group, as well as individual students
To alert the Division immediately of personal difficulties with students, parents, or staff
To protect the privacy and working environment of the class at all times
To understand and exhibit a professional manner at all times
To be responsible for the care and maintenance of an orderly environment and clean classroom materials
To be responsible for the safety and physical well-being of the students at all times
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
To be comfortable with both concert band and jazz music
To be comfortable conducting up to grade 4 literature
To have experience using Finale software
To have experience, skills and passion for growing music programs
A background in woodwinds is strongly preferred
To be able to communicate effectively with the educational team and especially with parents
To possess a good working knowledge of a variety of music styles and teaching methodologies
To have a positive, upbeat, fun, but disciplined approach to teaching and learning performance in order to prepare students for success
Bachelor’s Degree in Music is preferred
Demonstrable ability in musical concepts on their major instrument (flute, clarinet, and/or saxophone)
Physical Requirements and Work Environment
Work in a classroom environment dealing with a wide variety of challenges, deadlines, and a varied and diverse array of contacts
Occasionally bend, stoop, and squat
May work at a desk and computer for extended periods of time
Be able to occasionally lift up to 30 lbs.
Work primarily in a traditional climate controlled environment
Duties may be occasionally performed on field trips away from school
Work intermittently in outside weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold
