NSU University School’s nationally recognized Speech and Debate program is currently accepting applications for a teaching position in Middle and Upper School speech and debate classes. Qualified candidates will have the commitment to the Vision and Mission of NSU University School; the willingness to work in a collegial manner and ability to communicate effectively with faculty, staff, and parents; experience and demonstrated success in teaching students grades 6-12; mastery of creative and diverse methods of teaching, learning and assessment; engaging, innovative approach to teaching and the ability to nurture artistic expression meaningful and relevant by inspiring students in a positive, nurturing environment; experience with developing curriculum incorporating 21st Century Skills and the ability to work collaboratively. The successful candidate will be energetic and creative and possess a vision for excellence in the arts, a strong work ethic, and the ability to maintain and advance the achievements of our award-winning program.
Education and Experience:
Minimum of 12 hours in subject area and general knowledge of Speech and Debate events; Bachelor's Degree in Fine Arts, Communication or related field and previous teaching experience preferred.
To plan and implement curriculum and instruction for Middle and Upper School classes as well as coach the Speech & Debate team during after-school hours.
To oversee the organization and leadership of the forensics program as well as plan and host the annual Sunvitational Speech and Debate tournament.
Speech & Debate responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Oversee organizational and logistical components of the Speech and Debate program, including but not limited to budgeting, team travel, supervision, competition, events, community outreach, communication, data collection, student mentorship, coaching, judging, and marketing.
Plan and implement curriculum, instruction, and assessment for grades 6-12 in collaboration with other performing arts teachers to ensure seamless vertical alignment.
Collaborate with all stakeholders to facilitate student progress.
Maintain tournament schedule and develop itineraries.
Supervise students at local, regional and national tournaments as needed.
Administer accounts on Tabroom, Speechwire, and NSDA.
Coordinate and oversee the hiring of adjunct coaches for extracurricular student practice.
Organize a calendar for after school coaching and communicate opportunities to students and parents.
Provide training for judges, volunteers, and student mentors.
Attend all Arts Department and Divisional Faculty meetings and attend all Professional Development Days and school wide meetings.
Teaching responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Maintain all equipment and supplies used in the Performing and Visual Arts Department. to ensure their proper and safe utilization by all constituents.
Maintain the cleanliness and organization of the Forensics Suite.
Communicate student progress and behavior to students, parents, and administration.
Manage grade book, student attendance, and classroom behavior.
Participate in professional development opportunities and external relations.
Attend tournaments for supervision, judging, performing tab duties, coaching, and driving when needed.
Conduct student outreach to grow the program and introduce new students to the team.
