The Masters School seeks a Director of Athletics and Physical Education; this is a twelve-month, administrative position. This role will report to the Head of School.
The ideal candidate will be a seasoned leader with substantial experience as the successful head of a large and complex athletics program that includes interscholastic team sports, recreational and co-curricular sports, and a physical education program. Candidates must have experience managing significant budgets and operations, including oversight of the athletic staff, office support staff, coaches and game officials. The Director will work in a highly independent manner yet interfaces with the School’s leadership team, division heads, trustees, operations team and Admission office. He/She also serves as the liaison for all athletic conference-related meetings and activities.
The Director should possess not only the skills to effectively manage programs, but must also be a forward-thinking administrator with knowledge and experience in developing long-term strategies for athletic programs and must possess the understanding of the capital requirements needed to adequately support the program. The Director must provide the leadership for the marketing of programs among prospective students, faculty, staff, parents, alumnae/i, and the community. The Director must have proven skills in marketing and recruiting students and ensure that the Athletics program is informed by and is representative of the school’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. The Director will work closely with the Director of Enrollment Management on developing strategies to attract and retain academically eligible students to the School and its sports programs.
The Director must also be a nimble administrator who is able to function at a high level within a dynamic environment of significant growth and investment of assets. It is very important that the Director continue to build a solid foundation for all major team sports, ensuring high participation levels and showing careful planning for the on-going health and sustainability at the middle school, junior varsity and varsity team levels. The Director must also manage and be accountable for the School’s Athletic Credit Requirement (ACR).
The Director will work closely with the Athletic and Coaching staff to observe and assess their knowledge of the sport, and ability to inspire and support their players. The Director will nurture parent-coach relationships and mediate conflicts between students, parents, and coaches, if they arise. The Director is expected to support all teams impartially by attending both home and away games.
All departmental funds and accounts must be administered in a fiscally responsible manner and the Director must sustain a culture of sportsmanship, professionalism and respect at all levels.
REQUIREMENTS/ QUALIFICATIONS AND QUALITIES:
Bachelor’s degree (minimum)
Master’s degree (preferred)
10+ years of work experience
Experience leading a complex and successful athletic program
Demonstrated effective management skills, with emphasis on leadership, planning, budgeting and evaluation
In-depth knowledge of athletics, rules and regulations of athletic associations and conferences
Effective planning and organization skills, strong communication skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff, parents and the public at large
Prior experience in coaching at least one sport and in teaching physical education or wellness courses are desirable
Prior experience in independent schools, preferably in senior administration.
