The Masters School seeks a Dean of Faculty; this is a twelve-month, administrative position. This role will report to the Head of School.
The Dean of the Faculty is responsible for fostering a culture of student-centered teaching and learning at The Masters School. As an academic leader, the Dean of Faculty is responsible for articulating The Masters School’s educational philosophy and for ensuring the faculty’s pedagogical approaches are aligned with the educational philosophy. The Dean of Faculty will work with Division Heads to attract, develop, evaluate and retain faculty members. The position of Dean of Faculty also brings with it oversight of all faculty personnel issues.
The Dean of Faculty will also design and lead efforts aimed at implementing the academic goals outlined in the 2015 – 2020 strategic plan. Specifically, he/she is charged with supporting deep and transformational learning practices, building a faculty of distinction that embodies The Masters School’s philosophy and pedagogy, and ensuring that the school is a leader in innovative teaching.
Build a faculty of distinction: attracting, developing, evaluating and retaining top talent
Partner with Division Heads to attract high-quality/high-potential teachers to The Masters School; support the hiring process
Observe, coach and evaluate the faculty. Manage all aspects of the development and evaluation system, including:
The New Teacher Experience
MAGNET goal process
Support and develop Department Chairs and others working with teachers in the New Teacher, MAGNET and Portfolio processes
Make recommendations to the Head of School and the Division Heads regarding the hiring, retention, and the assignment of faculty
Lead the contract and salary system process, including working closely with the Head of School and Chief Financial Officer
Serve as a consultant and coach to teachers in matters of classroom management, teaching methods, and general school procedures
Work closely with the Head of School, Division Heads and Human Resources regarding any personnel issues that may arise
Ensure The Masters School is a leader in teaching innovation
Oversee professional development
Design annual professional development days (on campus)
Strategically align off-campus professional development with the needs of individual faculty members and the needs of the greater school
Support on-going, informal professional development
Build on the current new teacher orientation and mentoring programs through The New Teacher Experience
Manage the professional development budget
Design and support opportunities that connect The Masters School faculty with national conversations about Teaching and Learning
Teaching for Experience
National conference and networks (NAIS, TABS, etc)
MTC (Mastery Transcript Consortium)
Oversee with Advancement Office our EE Ford Grant initaitives
Actively raise ideas on issues of educational/philosophical interest and concern
Member of Senior Leadership Team
To support the school and its leadership.
Attend student events, campus gatherings and general be an active presence on campus.
SKILLS and CHARACTERISTICS:
A demonstrated ability to lead and inspire teachers, including direct experience as a supervisor
Proven capacity to design and implement new programs or initiatives
Familiarity with adult learning strategies and best practices in designing and implementing professional development
Experience working with or teaching students, particularly in independent, private, boarding, college preparatory, or like-kind school settings
A commitment to student-centered learning and a deep knowledge of pedagogical approaches aimed at deep learning
Experience in senior administration; familiarity with administrative systems, procedures, and practices
Superior communication and organizational skills
A willingness to collaborate, pitch in as needed, and participate in the life of the school
A sense of humor
EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND and WORK EXPERIENCE:
Master’s degree (required)
10+ years of work experience
Prior experience in independent schools, preferably in senior administration
