Sacramento Country Day School, the leading independent school in Sacramento and throughout the region, is seeking a Learning Specialist for the 2019-2020 school year. The Learning Specialist position includes the following tasks, among others:
Collaborate with classroom teachers to develop and coordinate student learning plans and related accommodations, as well as support to differentiate curriculum in order to meet the specific needs of all.
Facilitate time-bound, small group instruction for students who benefit from additional, systematic and explicit instruction in reading, writing, math or executive function skills.
Work with particular students to provide academic support for reading, writing, math, and/or executive function skills.
Consult with teachers in scaffolding and modifying curriculum and instructional methodology to support the learning needs and styles of all students in the classroom.
Meet with teachers as needed to collaborate on strategies and curriculum accommodations as well as modifications for specific students and to discuss instructional approaches and pedagogy.
Assessment & Intervention
Oversee AIMS Web benchmarks in Lower School and MAP testing in Middle School.
Support teachers in grouping and matching students with appropriate instruction, help create progress monitoring schedules, and track progress and classroom interventions for all students who fall below benchmarks in foundational academic areas.
Meet with teachers to review assessments and supports implementation of classroom intervention for students who are in need of additional support.
Informally assess students as part of the interactive process for students requiring additional support outside the general classroom instruction.
Meet regularly with Lower, Middle, and High School Student Support Teams.
Communicate with outside practitioners.
Engage in appropriate professional development regarding current practice and research for students with learning differences.
Attend parent conferences when necessary to support teachers or to inform parents on student progress, expectations, and goals.
An advanced degree, or post-graduate work in special education, with an emphasis on varied exceptionalities or learning disabilities, and a minimum of two years teaching and/or learning specialist experience in an independent school environment.
Training and experience with Singapore Math, Everyday Math, Leveled Literacy Intervention (LLI), and Lindamood-Bell are strongly preferred.
Demonstrated successful teaching experience and someone who truly enjoys working with children.
Excellent verbal and written skills, as well as outstanding interpersonal skills.
Demonstrated ability to work well with students and colleagues; willingness to be an active, enthusiastic member of the Sacramento Country Day community.
Demonstrated leadership and facilitative skills.
