The Walker School is a nonsectarian, co-educational independent day school serving three year olds through twelfth grade in Marietta, Georgia. Walker seeks an energetic and dedicated individual for an Upper School Learning Specialist position for the 2019-2020 school year. The Upper School Learning Specialist works in collaboration with teaching staff to support students with diagnosed learning differences and students having academic difficulties and may need to consider psychoeducational testing.
A Master’s degree or higher in special education or learning disabilities is required, and salary is based on experience and degrees earned.
Opportunities to coach, sponsor clubs, or work with student activities are available as well. Salary is based on degrees earned and years of experience and is commensurate with other independent schools in the area.
Be an advocate for students with diagnosed learning differences and work with them to create education plans to best leverage available resources for their academic success
Work with Principal, Grade Level Deans, and Counselor to monitor progress of students with learning differences
Review student reports from psychoeducational testing and meet with individual students to provide academic strategies in collaboration with the MS/US Academic Coach
Manage implementation of academic accommodations such as extended time, alternate test environment and laptop use (approximately 100 students)
Participate in parent/teacher conferences as needed
Communicate with private psychologists to discuss student needs and testing
Educate Upper School faculty about learning differences and ways to differentiate instruction for the benefit of all students
Oversee Peer Tutoring Program
Meet regularly and work with Learning Specialists from other divisions to create cohesive and continual vertical support program
Serve on Upper School Admission Committee
Serve as a Grade Level Advisor
Master’s degree or higher in special education or learning disabilities
Minimum of three years in related field
Familiarity with psychoeducational evaluations and experience implementing approved accommodations in a school setting
Ability to effectively work with parents and teenagers
Desire to be part of a vibrant and active faculty
Excellent verbal and written communication skills with an eye for detail and clarity
