The Science Teacher is a member of the school’s Lower Division and reports to the Lower Division Head. This full time, 10-month position is responsible for teaching science to students in Grades II and III in support of the school’s mission and curricular goals. Additionally, the science teacher will be a member of Park's science department and collaborate with its members Pre-K - Grade VIII. The ideal candidate will bring a history of effective team collaboration and demonstrated creativity and innovation in curriculum, instruction, and assessment. The ideal candidate will possess creative problem-solving skills, a sense of humor, a passion for science teaching and learning, and strong interpersonal skills that allow one to cooperate and collaborate effectively with others.
In addition to outstanding teaching ability, the position requires expertise with the social and emotional needs of this age group and the ability to balance the encouragement of intellectual growth with creating a learning environment that supports the needs of a range of learning styles.
Roles & Responsibilities
Design, plan, and implement learning experiences for science in Grades II - III
Meaningfully integrate technologies into the classroom
Establish and maintain a healthy and trusting learning environment, fostering nurturing relationships with students
Guide students in their social-emotional development, maintaining expectations and support for positive and productive student behavior
Collaborate with the Director of Equity & Inclusion to keep multiculturalism and diversity as a priority of curricular work and curriculum development
Regularly communicate with families about classroom happenings and student progress
Update documentation of current curriculum, instruction, and assessment
Maintain records of individual student progress and achievement
Participate fully in ongoing professional development
Oversee Park’s Outdoor Learning Garden
Participate in the school community, including faculty and committee work, school duties, and activities such as clubs and assemblies
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Elementary Education preferred
Three or more years teaching science in the primary grades
Depth of understanding in science, including knowledge of NGSS
Knowledge of child development, research-based best practices and current trends in primary science education
Experience using a variety of assessment data to inform instruction
Skill in differentiating instruction
Outstanding interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills
Demonstrated experience working in a culturally diverse community
