Sidwell Friends, a coeducational Quaker day school, seeks a full-time Lower School Music Teacher (PK-4) for the 2019-20 school year. The PK-4th grade music program seeks to nurture a love of music and provide children with a firm understanding of musical concepts and skills. The program is a choral and ORFF-inspired program designed to bring these elements to life through songs, movement, games, listening, rhythmic work and ORFF instruments.
The ideal candidate will have a strong musical background that includes both teaching and performing and a strong lens towards equity, justice and diversity work when choosing materials and content. Community performances are an important part of the Lower School music program, and are organized and accompanied by the music teacher. The successful candidate will have a collaborative spirit, an interest in building community within and beyond the classroom, a strong commitment to nurturing children’s individual talents and passions, and a commitment to our Quaker values. Additional duties include collaborating with teachers on plays, organizing our Lower School community performances (Grandparents and Special Friends’ Day, Holiday Program, etc.), performing recess duties, etc. A BM/BS degree in Music Education (or comparable degree), experience in the ORFF-Schulwerk (recommended Level I course completion) and Kodaly methodology, Lower School teaching experience, and proficiency on the piano. Position begins in August 2019.
