The Advancement Director builds a community of supporters, cultivates and solicits impactful and sustainable funding streams from individuals, corporations, foundations and others, while driving home our message, lessons and innovations internally and externally. The Advancement Director is central to Aspen Academy’s success, is a member of the senior leadership team and reports to the Head of School. This position also works closely with the Development Committee of the Board of Trustees and supervises a part-time Administrative Manager.
Summary of Duties:
The Advancement Director will:
Build a strategy and lead a team that secures $1m a year in philanthropic giving by 2020, and puts in place clear steps to sustain and grow that level of giving beyond 2020;
Identify additional funding sources to support Aspen Academy’s broader mission and businesses.
Inspire the community with compelling messaging and storytelling about Aspen Academy creating a path that profoundly reshapes the way education across Colorado and the country is perceived;
Build strong personal relationships that foster a community of advocates (Business and Community Leaders, Neighbors, Employees, etc.) who, together with Aspen Academy, give voice to innovative practices in education with an eye on shaping practices throughout the country;
Serve on the Senior Leadership Team that sets direction and collectively work to make Aspen Academy a special place to work and a place that radically changes the way the education sector operates; and
Be a professional and public face of Aspen Academy that reinforces the depth and strength of our team.
The essential duties and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
Develop and execute a strategy that ensures Aspen Academy secures $1 million a year in philanthropic giving by 2020. The Advancement Director can use existing programs and talent and will have complete authority to reshape and strengthen the Department as needed to achieve stated goals and establish an endowment for the school;
Create, lead and manage strategies for campaigns, appeals, corporate partnerships, foundations, grants and events to meet, or surpass, organizational funding goals for short-term and long-term objectives;
Build Aspen’s reputation as a unique partner that all want to be associated with as we collectively reshape the education sector;
Collaborate with the Marketing & Engagement team in sharing internal and external marketing and communications, with an eye on increasing knowledge and understanding of what Aspen Academy does programmatically, how people outside of Aspen Academy can tangibly support our work and efforts to reshape the education sector, and make Aspen the place where all want to engage and support;
Share and disseminate lessons learned as well as innovations developed with an eye on showing how Aspen actually reshapes educational practices and other outcomes;
Develop a high performing team of volunteers and works collaboratively with each of the other departments, understanding that we are driven by Programs and their efforts to radically improve education;
Report regularly to the Board of Trustees and its Advancement Committee regarding development strategies and outcomes;
Staff the Board's Advancement Committee and provide support, education and leadership to the Board to increase their understanding and engage them in Aspen Academy’s work and enhance their ability to bring resources to the organization;
Work with the President and the Advancement Committee to build and cultivate a culture of philanthropy among Aspen Academy’s trustees, staff, current and former students and their families.
Assess and update current systems, policies, and procedures for development efforts including: cultivation, stewardship, gift/pledge processing, fund reporting, acknowledgments, tracking and reporting;
Create and manage an annual budget, prepare department reporting with corresponding goals and outcomes; and
Be a strategic driver of innovation in the organization, and work collectively with other teams to explore opportunities for organizational improvement; Serve on the Senior Leadership Team and represent Aspen Academy on key Board committees.
A successful track record in fundraising, major gifts, endowments
A high level of leadership and fiscal management skills
The successful candidate should have a passion and enthusiasm for Aspen Academy’s mission, vision, values and strategic plan
Solid written and verbal communication skills
Ability to pay attention to detail and manage multiple tasks and projects under the pressure of deadlines
Strong proficiency with Excel, Office, and other computerized database systems is required
Strong communication, interpersonal, and relationship-building skills
Commitment to working with a diverse staff and clientele
Highest regard for confidentiality, professionalism, and exemplary ethical standards is necessary
Education & Experience:
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline;
Proven experience in fundraising;
Strong demonstrated management skills with a focus on results and performance improvement;
Unafraid of big challenges in uncertain and changing policy, philanthropic and public environments; and
Experience in Salesforce or similar CRM/development platform preferred.
