Chatham Day School, a coed, pre-school through 8th grade school in Chatham, NJ, seeks a Middle and Upper School Division Head (4th-8th grade). The Division Head reports directly to the Head of School and is a member of the Administrative team.
Act as the educational leader of the 4th-8th grades, responsible for the day-to-day operations, overseeing budgets, and arranging for all special events related to the Middle and Upper Divisions
Function as the chief architect and communicator of the divisions' programs, expectations, behavioral guidelines, and other information necessary to ensure that all constituencies are fully informed consistent with their individual roles.
Be visible, flexible, joyful and responsive throughout the day to students and faculty to ensure a positive culture within the division.
Maintain complete academic records on all students; oversee the grading and the reporting of standards and methods used by teachers in measuring student achievement.
Be responsible for student disciplinary issues, disciplinary discussions with students and parents, and for the implementation of any necessary consequences-- and to follow up with appropriate school personnel.
Work closely with the School Counselor and Nurse to ensure that the physical, emotional and social needs of all students are being met.
Collaborate with the Head of School on all personnel related matters, including shared responsibility for teachers and staff members to be hired, retained and dismissed.
Observe, supervise, and evaluate the faculty in the development and implementation of curriculum; supervise the teaching process.
Be responsible for reviewing and evaluating the academic programs in collaboration with the faculty, ensuring that it is challenging, relevant and following current best practice.
Schedule regular faculty meetings and develop appropriate agendas based on faculty and staff input and needs of the division, including but not limited to routine school matters and issues of educational/ philosophical interest and concern.
Establish programs for the orientation of new teachers, for in-service training of all teachers, and for the evaluation of classroom teachers, to ensure that teachers are familiar with and adhere to school policies in all areas of the school operation.
Maintain clear and timely communication and relations with students, faculty, staff, parents and other divisions as well as outside groups (i.e., PA, class parents, other schools, etc.). Promote the successes, strengths and mission of the Middle and Upper Schools with both the internal and external community.
Assist in the coordination of the co-curricular and extra-curricular activity programs of the school; assist in the planning and the presentation of school assemblies and programs; assist in maintaining a comprehensive calendar of division specific events.
Collaborate with the Early Childhood and Lower Division Head to create a well-balanced academic and extra-curricular schedule for students and faculty that balances curricular, extra-curricular, and social activities.
Work with the Admissions Office in attracting, interviewing, accepting and placing new students, as well as conducting tours and participating in the school’s open houses.
Ensure compliance with legal requirements of government regulations and agencies; and required NJAIS Accreditation standards.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Head of School (including potentially teaching one class period per day).
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Extensive experience working (and enjoying working) with students at this age level.
Knowledge of curriculum development and current educational trends at this age level
