King School is an independent, college preparatory day school serving students from Pre-kindergarten through Grade 12. We are a diverse, vibrant learning community dedicated to educational excellence and the fullest academic and personal achievement of our students. Drawing students from over 30 communities in Fairfield County, Connecticut and New York, King has a long history of academic excellence within a community that has always placed the individual student at the center. King is the product of the merger over time of four different schools in the local area: Low-Heywood, King’s Day School, Thomas School, and the Low-Heywood Thomas School. The School completed the process of renaming and rebranding itself in 2016 as King School. The School continues to distinguish itself by showcasing the deeply rooted, defining elements of the School, which stem from each of the founding institutions, and which enable its PreK-Grade 12 students to thrive: exceptional faculty; student-centered approach to teaching and learning; academic excellence; a culture of integrity, kindness, perseverance, and respect. The Position: King School has been committed to creating a strong culture for diversity and inclusion throughout our history, as articulated in our Diversity Policy Statement and as evidenced by the ongoing work of colleagues and families to take proactive steps in these areas. This summer we will welcome a Director of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion who will step into a newly-defined position, will report to Head of School, Dr. Karen Eshoo, and will serve as a member of the Leadership Team. The Director will be responsible for leading initiatives across all divisions - in partnership with colleagues, students, parents, and alumni - that will deepen our collective DEI understanding and practice as it relates to our academic program, our school culture, and our students’ ability to thrive in an increasingly complex and globalized world. The Director will take the lead in creating dynamic learning opportunities for all constituencies that will leverage our strong, existing relationships in order to encourage engagement that welcomes multiple perspectives in inclusive, inviting, and appropriately challenging ways. We seek a leader with a deep knowledge of current research and best practices in the DEI, particular for independent schools, a track record of excellent written and verbal communication skills, and an ability to think and act strategically for both short-term growth and long-term development. Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to: - In partnership with the three Division Heads, create and implement developmentally-appropriate academic and co-curricular programs for students in grades PreK-12.
- In partnership with the Dean of Faculty and members of the Leadership Team, assess the School’s hiring practices with a focus on cultural competence, and participate in the recruitment of diverse candidate pools and the hiring process.
- In partnership with the Parents Association and the King Inclusion and Diversity (KIND) committee, develop and implement parent education programs and opportunities for family engagement.
- Teach 1-2 sections in the Middle and/or Upper School
- Participate as a member of the Leadership Team, which includes responsibilities for the implementation of the School’s strategic plan (to be launched in the fall of 2019).
