Poly Prep seeks applicants for the position of Dean of Student Life. The Dean of Student Life (Grades 5-12) is a full-time, 12-month position, reporting jointly to the Heads of Upper and Middle Schools. The position will also work closely with the school’s Institute for Ethical Leadership (IfEL) to ensure that character development and the pursuit of a well-lived life are central aspects of student activities, clubs, and programs. This position serves as a member of divisional administrative teams and has overall responsibility for student programs, the advisory program, student participation in the discipline system, clubs and activities, and school-sponsored social gatherings. In addition, this role includes teaching one class.
Professional and Leadership
Inspire, lead, and foster student culture at Poly’s Upper and Middle Schools.
Generate happiness, foster a sense of community, and promote the School’s values.
Lead and guide the Honor Council’s role in the student discipline process.
Plan and organize weekly Assembly speakers and special programs with division heads and IfEL.
Provide vision and oversight for the school’s clubs and activities program.
Oversee student leadership selection, the US student government, and MS Senate with support from Deans.
Work with the student government to plan student aspects of Prom, Homecoming, and Oasis Night.
Oversee class field and overnight trips; ensure all appropriate policies, procedures, and supervision are in place; attend field trips and/or overnights when necessary.
Collaborate with IfEL to lead the school’s advisory program with direct responsibility for overseeing advisory assignments.
Lead and manage the internship program.
With deans, collaborate and manage the Prep for Poly transitional program for students new to the Dyker Heights campus.
Communicate with students about assemblies, calendar items, and other relevant information.
Attend the daily Deans’ meeting to participate in policy, counseling, discipline, and school culture discussions.
Work with Assistant Head of School, Academics and division heads to implement the School’s strategic initiatives and key K-12 priorities in the Upper School.
Fulfill all other duties and responsibilities assigned by the School.

Be transparent and collaborative to foster the spirit of teamwork and rapport with students, deans, and teachers.

Build systems and structures that enhance the student experience.
Be organized and effective with execution of events.
Work well with divisional leadership and the deans.
Inspire and connect well with high school and middle school students.
Be able to work with parents and families in support of the overall student experience.
5 years’ experience in a similar student life role preferred.
Proven leadership abilities.
Experience or prior work in independent schools.
Successful track record working with students and student life programming.
Outstanding interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
Skill using technology.
