The Philadelphia School (TPS) is seeking a fourth/fifth grade Teacher for the 2019-2020 academic year. We are a PreK - 8 progressive/independent school located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with an enrollment of 475 students. Since our founding in 1972, The Philadelphia School has grown in size, complexity, and diversity. This growth has been rooted firmly in the progressive values with which our founders began: immersive learning, responsive pedagogy, and meaningful engagement with the world.
Our fourth and fifth grades are mixed-age classrooms, where students remain with the same teachers for two years. Students work through a two-year rotating thematic curriculum, focusing on Ancient Greece for one year and China the other year. Each class has two lead teachers who work as a team with approximately 24 children.
Work collaboratively with other fourth and fifth grade teachers and other grades levels, the learning resource team, and with specialists to meet the need of diverse learners and to develop an engaging thematic curriculum.
Must be able to offer developmentally appropriate learning opportunities.
Design and implement curriculum
Build respectful and and supportive relationships with students,
Develop strong home-school partnerships with parents and communicate with families clearly, frequently, and with cultural sensitivity.
Participate in school wide initiatives
Engage in ongoing professional development and growth through in-service education activities provided by the school and/or in self-selected professional growth activities
A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in education, with a master’s degree preferred.
Prior experience in a progressive/independent school strongly preferred.
Passion for instilling in children a lifelong love of learning
Strong interpersonal and communication skills
Ability to work collaboratively within a grade level team and to communicate effectively with students and families
Evidence of successful experience in working as instructor or specialist, with students at appropriate grade level
Strong classroom management skills and flexible approach to teaching
Our progressive pedagogy demands that the candidate have interest in integrating curriculum, careful student observation, and co-teaching.
