For over 50 years, The Gateway School has transformed the lives of bright children who experience academic difficulty as a result of language-based learning disabilities (e.g., dyslexia, reading and writing disorders), attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), executive function disorder, visual-spatial or auditory processing difficulties, and/or gross and fine motor coordination issues. Located on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, Gateway will expand in 2019-2020 and enroll 210 students between the ages of 5-14. In small classes with a low student-to-teacher ratio, faculty and therapists meet students where they are, individualize instruction accordingly, and develop them into skilled, strategic, independent learners who are capable of advocating for themselves and who are prepared to transition into mainstream school and life. As a result of our expansion, we will have several new positions available in 2019-2020.
The Gateway School seeks an experienced School Counselor (psychologist, social worker or guidance counselor) to support and guide our students with their academic and social development. The School Counselor leads social development groups, participates in the admissions process, works closely with students and families, represents students at CSE meetings, and collaborates with teachers, specialists and administrators. The ideal candidate possesses counseling and classroom teaching skills for the delivery of Gateway’s Social Development curriculum, and a passion for working with young children.
Graduate degree in clinical psychology, counseling, social work or a related field.
Active New York Licensure or Certification in one of the following required: Licensed Psychologist or Certified School Psychologist; Licensed Social Worker or Certified School Social Worker; or Certified Guidance Counselor.
Three years of related work experience, which includes experience with learning disabled students and their families preferred
Independent school experience preferred
Knowledge of Collaborative & Proactive Solutions and Zones of Regulation preferred.
Flexibility, a desire to collaborate, and strong oral and written communication skills
