Walker seeks highly skilled, dedicated, experienced individuals for full-time associate teaching for the 2019-2020 school year in its Immersive Dyslexia Program. This is a unique opportunity to work in a specialized school-within-a-school setting. The program is described below.
Walker’s Immersive Dyslexia Program launched in the 2018-1019 academic year. The mission of the program is to serve children with dyslexia who have above average academic aptitude and a strong desire to fulfill their abundant potential. The program serves elementary-age students. Four classes are anticipated for the 2019-2020, the second year of the program. Students in the program, their classroom teachers, and the Director work and learn within The Walker School’s college-preparatory environment. The Orton-Gillingham Approach (O-G) is central to the curriculum. Each associate teacher is responsible for teaching small O-G and math groups, and supporting instruction within the Immersive Dyslexia Program classes.
Additionally, the associate teacher will work alongside the other teacher(s) in the Immersive Dyslexia Program as well as grade-level teachers in a collaborative manner, but will have the primary responsibility for planning, teaching, evaluating, and reporting for students in his/her groups. Associate teachers will work closely with other classroom teachers in the program and co-curricular teachers to create a child-centered, multisensory learning environment for the students and a cooperative and positive adult working environment. The associate teacher is responsible for establishing relationships with students, encouraging them to communicate respectfully, and to develop optimally their self-advocacy, problem-solving skills, abilities, interests, and enthusiasm for learning.
The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree or higher in education or special education/learning disabilities as well as formal, documented training in the Orton-Gillingham Approach. The ideal candidate will also be an educator who possesses a vast knowledge of multi-sensory, research-based, age-appropriate and skill-appropriate teaching methodology for students with dyslexia or other language-based learning difficulties. Preferred candidates will have three or more years of teaching experience in independent schools as well as prior experience teaching students with dyslexia using the O-G Approach in either a school setting or in one-to-one tutoring.
Salary is dependent upon experience and commensurate with other independent schools in the area.
