Maret seeks a full-time science teacher to join the faculty for our 2019–2020 school year. The ideal candidate will be passionate about science and science education, someone who possesses the desire and ability to teach eighth-grade Chemistry courses. We seek a teacher who is enthusiastic about working collaboratively to design innovative curriculum and to implement research-based pedagogy. Prior teaching experience required.
The Science program at Maret is based on hands-on, exploratory learning. The process of science is the focus of the program; students are natural scientists, and it is our goal to capture, harness and direct their enthusiasm as they mature and develop. They become good observers and, ultimately, critical thinkers who are able to understand their impact on the world around them.
Middle School science classes meet 4 times a week and process is emphasized over content. Inquiry, data analysis and critical thinking are central to each course. Each class meets in a fully equipped lab, and students become confident experimentalists. There is a Science Fair in grades 5 and 6. Robotics is used as an introduction to programming in Grade 7, and students in grades 6-8 may participate in the First Lego League Tournament through the MS Robotics Club. The eighth-grade course culminates with a Climate Change project in which the students attend an in-house conference at which they act as representatives of a variety of countries, NGOs, and businesses.
Full-time science teachers teach four courses and work with students who possess a wide range of abilities and learning styles. Additionally, teachers serve as academic advisors, supervise students in a variety of settings, perform administrative duties, and participate in the many aspects of school life that are typical at an urban, independent day school.
