Founded in 1842, Saint James School is an independent Episcopal co-ed boarding and day school serving Grades 8-12 located near Hagerstown, Maryland. Saint James is seeking an Assistant Director of Development to :
Participate in all areas of capital campaign administration, including marketing, donor outreach, event planning, and correspondence.
Manage and implement a newly-developed donor stewardship plan.
Assist in the review and implementation of a new planned giving strategy.
The School is in the leadership phase of an ambitious, comprehensive capital campaign to address priority facilities needs, annual operating support and endowment and will significantly multiply current fundraising. To date, the campaign has raised more than $20 million toward its ambitious $35 million goal. The School has engaged fundraising counsel and is planning efforts to complete the campaign by June 2021. It is expected that the public phase of the campaign will require the participation of the new Assistant Director to meet its goals.
The Assistant Director of Development will report to the Director of Development and will be responsible for the following functional areas:
Assist with specific campaign elements such as the public phase campaign plan, internal and external communications, and campaign-related events.
Work with the Director of Communications to draft newsletters, website content, social media posts, and marketing materials related to the campaign.
Integrate campaign work with other communications, Annual Fund, and Alumni Relations initiatives.
Plan and coordinate campaign events, meetings, and fundraising activities.
Act as a liaison between the Development Office, campaign volunteers and the fundraising consultant.
Provide assistance with other major donor work, prospect identification and research.
The Assistant Director will work to ensure that donors are properly acknowledged and recognized for their contributions to Saint James. He or she will:
Coordinate and implement an integrated donor relations program that targets all levels of giving.
Use appropriate processes and technology to ensure responsiveness to and acknowledgement of the School’s donors.
Be responsible for all phases of gift acknowledgements, including thank you letters, pledge statements, endowment reports, and donor receipts.
With the Director of Development, the Assistant Director will work with present donors and new prospects who are interested in including Saint James in the wills, trusts, or other long-range financial and estate plans. To achieve this goal, he or she will:
Assist in the review and evaluation of the School’s planned giving program.
Assist in the implementation and administration of the resulting planned giving strategy.
Qualifications and Requirements
Education: Bachelor’s degree or higher.
Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
Minimum 4 years of office experience in development, fundraising, public relations/marketing, or other independent school or higher-ed setting; previous capital campaign experience and familiarity with planned giving preferred.
Excellent computer skills with working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite; fundraising database experience strongly preferred.
Integrity; previous experience with highly-confidential information preferred.
Outgoing, positive, team-player attitude, willingness to be supportive to colleagues and volunteers.
Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
Ability to work independently and to make good decisions.
Must be available to work occasional evenings and weekends.
Occasional day or overnight travel will be required.
