The Dean of Students provides risk management, program development and implementation, and oversight of student leadership and conduct in the Upper School. The Dean of Students reports to the Upper School Director and works collaboratively with the Academic Dean, College Counselors, Grade Level Advisors, School Counselor, Athletic Director, advisors, and faculty. Responsibilities will be performed in a manner that is consistent with Cape Fear Academy’s mission, vision and values, maintaining a high level of professionalism and support of the school at all times.
Major Responsibilities:
Oversee daily student life in the areas of attendance, conduct, dress code, and parking, including assigning and tracking all student conduct records.
Guide and facilitate student adherence to CFA policies and procedures as it relates to student government, campus events, and student activities and programs.
Enforce rules and regulations in accordance with the US Student/ Parent Handbook. Revise and update the US Student/ Parent Handbook annually.
Plan and organize class and school-wide activities, including orientation and class retreats. Monitor risk management of all student programming to include on-campus and off-campus activities, excursions, and overnight trips.
Assist the US Office Manager and School Counselor in developing and implementing programs to support student life including assemblies, advisory, and character development curriculum. Supervise leadership training for students and identify opportunities for skill development through the Leaders for Life Program.
Supervise the US Advisory Program.
Advise the Student Government Association and work with all school-wide organizations and faculty advisors.
Meet weekly with student SGA representatives;
Oversee the Honor Council
Attend and supervise SGA events and activities.
Facilitate SGA elections.
Coordinate school dances and other special activities; and arrange for faculty chaperones
Work with Grade Level Advisors to support the academic and social success of all students, with emphasis on orienting new students into the CFA community.
Serve on the Upper School Leadership Team, Attendance Committee, and Student Support Team.
The US Dean of Students will also be required to teach one class.
Performs other projects and duties as assigned.
Possess excellent oral and written communication skills.
Ability to demonstrate a high degree of diplomacy, tact, and discretion in handling sensitive and confidential situations.
Demonstrate passion for working with upper school-aged children and their families.
Knowledge of adolescent pedagogy and social, emotional development.
Possess strong problem solving and leadership skills.
Ability to collaborate, exercise good judgment, and model Cape Fear Academy’s core values of respect, integrity, resilience, and accountability.
Experience: Minimum of five years teaching experience, preferably at the upper school level in an independent school environment, and three years of leadership, administration and/or counseling experience.
