Worcester Preparatory School seeks an experienced part-time high school Chinese (Mandarin) teacher to establish and grow a program of Chinese foreign language instruction at WPS. The school expects the position to grow over time into a full-time position where Chinese is taught at multiple levels. An initial full-time position may be possible in the first year, where a candidate can teach other subjects, currently math or French. This position reports to the Upper School Head and typically teaches five sections per day in a seven period schedule and may be assigned study halls, clubs, or other supervisory roles. Section sizes range from 14 – 18 students. In addition, each faculty member in the Upper and Middle School serve as advisor to seven to nine students.
Candidates for this position should possess a BA degree with a major (preferred) or minor in Chinese and be conversationally fluent in the language. In lieu of an undergraduate degree in Chinese, demonstrated proficiency in the language is acceptable. Previous experience teaching Chinese at the high school level at an independent school is desirable but not required. State certification is not required. Candidates with the experience and interest to head coach Varsity Girls Lacrosse or assist in coaching Varsity/JV Boys Soccer are desirable.
