Community School #1 is a small, independent elementary school built on the principles of curiosity, creativity, and community. We are Kansas City’s locally cultivated, family-oriented, one-room schoolhouse. Our small enrollment (typically 14 to 22 students) fosters self-reliance and a strong school community, as the children learn to care for themselves and each other. The multi-age cohort of students (ranging from K to 6th grade) promotes interaction, mentoring, and social bonds across ages.
CS#1 challenges students to reach their personal best while building emotional intelligence and a strong sense of self-worth. We employ a homegrown, progressive curriculum that utilizes the students’ curiosity to dive deep and learn more. Arts and language are an integral part of the school’s curriculum, as we believe creativity provides the spark that makes learning fun and impactful. We develop an understanding of world cultures and an in-depth relationship with the greater Kansas City area, as our concept of community is both small and large. We strive to develop students who are confident in themselves, their relationships, their knowledge, and their roles in their communities.
What are the ideal skills and characteristics for this position?
Desire to teach beyond academics, based on the belief that teaching character, advocacy, arts, and responsibility is equally important as math, literacy, and science.
Ability to adapt curriculum to scaffold learning for all students.
Belief that children are capable, based on the knowledge that students can achieve and do the unexpected and the remarkable, as long as they have the support and care of those around them.
Ability to be flexible and structured, depending on circumstances. Having the knowledge and confidence to know when to adhere to each principle or a combination of the two.
