The teacher will work in conjunction with the Head of The Middle School, The Assistant Head of the Middle School, the Upper Elementary teaching team, the learning specialist, and the school psychologist to educate and lead Upper Elementary students (grades 4-6) in accordance with the principles of Montessori educational philosophy and practices, the mission, the curriculum, and the policies of Brooklyn Heights Montessori School. The teacher may teach language arts, math, and cultural subjects (social studies and science). The teacher will work in consultation with the Upper Elementary teachers to perform the duties and responsibilities required for this job. The teacher will report directly to the Head of The Middle School and the Assistant Head of The Middle School, who will give feedback on a regular basis on goals and classroom observations in person and/or in writing. Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Prepare lessons in the designated subject areas in accordance with the curriculum of Brooklyn Heights Montessori School, its mission, and Montessori philosophy
Assist in the development, review, and update of curriculum and curriculum maps as needed in conjunction with the Head of the Middle School
Prepare an annual statement of goals and objectives and a self-evaluation for professional development
When requested, be available during school hours to advise parents
Be in attendance at school in accordance with the times set forth in the letter of agreement
Be an advisor to a designated group of students
Maintain a prepared environment in the classroom and other areas for instruction
Meet with Upper Elementary head teacher on a regular basis to plan curriculum, discuss students, and discuss whatever is necessary to ensure the smooth running of the classroom
Maintain student records with regard to attendance and report writing
Prepare for and participate in regular parent-teacher conferences as determined by the Upper Elementary teachers
Assist in the preparation of reports for parents as requested by the Upper Elementary teachers
Attend and participate in various evening meetings, such as Back-to-School Night and Parent Potluck
Participate in regularly scheduled overnight trips with students
Attend and contribute to regularly scheduled faculty meetings
Comply with the established policies and procedures of Brooklyn Heights Montessori School as stated in the Faculty and Staff Handbook
Perform various reasonable tasks from time to time as requested by the Head of School or the Head of The Middle School.
Degree in Education - Masters required for Lead Teacher candidates
Minimum of two years teaching experience (Montessori preferred)
Montessori Credentials preferred
Strong work ethic and sense of humor
