As a member of The Middle School Leadership Team, reporting to the Head of the Middle School, the Assistant Head of The Middle School works closely with the Head of the Middle School to lead the ongoing work to develop and assess the program in accordance with the strategic plan goals and objectives. The ideal candidate has significant teaching and leadership experience and will assume responsibility for curriculum including review and revision, as well as the adoption of new curricula as needed and work to bridge The Middle School curriculum with The Lower School, VAPA, and Physical Education. This is a 10 month position with additional weeks in August and June.
A class in the candidate’s area of expertise including math, science or language arts/English to Upper Elementary or Middle School students
Serve as advisor to students in either Upper Elementary or Middle School
Coordinate and lead Expert Project and Magnum Opus
Co-coordinate with Middle School Head to create in-house professional development opportunities and program-wide faculty meetings
Develop schedules for grades 4-8
Participate in Educational Leadership Team
Lead the yearly curriculum guide update process
Assist in teacher preparation for parent curricular presentations, such as Back to School Night, Inside BHMS, Journey Meetings, etc.
Aid the MS Head in development of MS calendar
Assist in creating and facilitating New Parent Orientation with MS Head
Schedule field trips and overnight trips including lodging and transportation
Mentor, evaluate and support faculty in coordination with Head of Middle School
Assist with the high school exmissions process
Assist MS Head in implementation of strategic plan goals
Participate in the Middle School hiring committees
Participate on UE and MS Admissions team including interviews, tours, committee etc. as needed
Lend support for special events: staff development, staff social events, parent events, All-school assemblies, VAPA shares, Celebration Of Light, etc.
Organize the writing/reading/editing of all student reports
Schedule and host parent and educator observations
Responsible for MS Subs/Lunch coverage: hiring, creating sublist, managing for sick days, keeping track of time sheets and submitting them twice monthly to payroll officer
Perform various reasonable tasks from time to time as requested by the Head of School and Head of The Middle School
Knowledge of educational best practices, specifically for children ages nine through fourteen
An inclination for strategic thinking with the ability to look to the future, anticipate needs, develop new initiatives, and implement short? and long?term plans
Strong oral and written communication skills and the ability to articulate ongoing progress toward program goals
Honesty and personal integrity as overarching values in dealing with others
Organizational skills, capabilities for self?direction, flexibility and practicality to respond to changing priorities and unexpected situations
