This position is responsible for assisting the athletic director with organizing the Basketball program. The position is responsible for conducting practices, motivating students, and instructing student athletes in game strategies and techniques.This is a full-time, salaried faculty position reporting to the Athletic Director. Other administrative tasks in the athletic department will be assigned commensurate with background and experience.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Program Leader for Boys’ Basketball
Oversee all in-season and out-of-season programming for JV and Varsity Boys’ teams. This includes all practices, summer camps, individual workouts, and tournaments/scheduling over School breaks.
Works to develop a program which is mission appropriate and reflects the values of Asheville School.
Ensure that all programming adheres to NCISAA guidelines and policies
Collaborate with the Director of Athletics to build competitive game schedules for both the JV and Varsity teams and to hire appropriate staff to serve as assistants for the Varsity team and coach the JV team
Collaborate with the Athletic Facilities Manager to ensure that all school-issued equipment is properly inventoried and maintained
Head Varsity Boys’ Basketball Coach
Direct the activities and assignments of all assistant coaches and student managers, including mentoring and professional development
Develop a competitive system that promotes the scholar-athlete model, fosters collaboration and teamwork, and develops the skill level of all players
Ensure that all athletes strive for and are held to the Athletic Department’s Varsity Standard
Write daily practice plans that promote effective communication and collaboration between all coaches
Model the highest ideals of sportsmanship and maintain appropriate/professional conduct towards players, officials, parents and spectators
Advocate for and fully participate in the School’s Strength and Conditioning program
Adhere to all policies and procedures set forth in the Coaches Handbook
Drive Asheville School vehicles to and from games
Other duties within the athletic department as assigned by the Athletic Director.

Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to dial a telephone, see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear and understand speech at normal levels, outdoors and on the telephone; speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly; physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds to shoulder height and 50 pounds to waist height; and to bend, to stoop, to sit on the floor, to climb stairs, to walk and to reach overhead.

Minimum Job Requirements- Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
At least 3-5 years of experience as a Head Varsity Boys’ Basketball Coach
Strong organizational, interpersonal and communication skills
Demonstrated success developing players and building competitive programs
Experience coaching in an independent/boarding school environment is preferred
Commitment to ongoing professional development
