Overview of Position
This position is for 5-8 Music Teacher. The successful candidate will report to the Middle School Division Head. As 5-8 Music Teacher, the successful candidate will be responsible for the following:
Teach four sections of music for each grade level, 6th through 8th grade and two sections at 5th grade
Develop and strengthen performance skills in the recorder, singing, and playing percussion, Orff instruments, as well as other instruments
Teach two elective music classes
Work with 8th-grade team to prepare 8th-grade students for graduation performance, including attending all rehearsals and commencement
Prepare and conduct two evening music performances: one at midyear and the other in the spring showcasing student musicians and singers
Prepare for two daytime in-school music performances for student body
Run a before school morning orchestra one day per week
Oversee a mixed grade level Family group
Support the 6th-grade team in the implementation of the advisory curriculum, including providing support for study hall two days a week.
Accompany 6th-grade students on any study trips
The candidate must have:
Three or more years of music teaching experience, preferably at the middle school level
Commitment to early adolescent education and social/emotional development
Commitment to creating an inclusive classroom community that allows for a multitude of perspectives to be heard and respected
Knowledge of how to teach multiple instruments, e.g. piano, guitar, recorder, Orff instruments, other percussion instruments, ukulele, etc.
Knowledge of how to create access points for students with varying degrees of music exposure and ability
Ability and willingness to work in teams
Ability to effectively communicate with prospective and current parents
An ideal candidate would have:
Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
Sense of humor
Strong organizational and record keeping skills
Excellent interpersonal skills
Commitment to anti-bias learning
Awareness of differentiated learning and teaching styles
Duties school-wide include:
Recess and lunch duties
Staffing study or service trips
Co-lead one family in our Families program
Attendance at weekly Team 6 meetings
Attendance at weekly faculty meetings
