We are seeking a talented, compassionate and engaging Director of Athletics, Health and Physical Education committed to our mission of developing responsible citizens of a global society. Under minimal supervision, you will manage all aspects of Athletics, Health and Physical Education. You will directly supervise Coaches and Physical Education Teacher(s). You will support students, parents, and other community members in realizing our Guiding Principles and will abide by our Framework for Professional Standards.

Under minimal supervision, manages all aspects of the athletics, health and physical education programs at the school. Recruits for, supervises and disciplines Coaches and Physical Education Teacher(s). Directs the Outdoor Education program.
Develops, organizes, supervises and evaluates the entire program of physical education, and intramural and interscholastic athletics for the entire school
Ensures that all teaching and coaching positions are filled with competent Teachers and Coaches who are properly trained in all organizational and philosophical aspects of the athletic program
Ensures that all Teachers and Coaches are performing their duties at the very highest level of professionalism
Develops professional growth plans for Physical Education Teachers and Coaches
Implements a Student Assistant-Coaching program to promote leadership growth in students
Participates with the Head of school and the Division Directors in employment decisions and faculty assignments relating to physical education and athletics
Working in coordination with the Director of Facilities and Transportation, ensures the proper maintenance and security of all physical education equipment, athletic equipment, and athletic facilities, fields and courts
Oversees the distribution, collection, cleaning, repair, and storage of all athletic uniforms and equipment
Organizes (and submits to the Administrative Assistant to the Middle School Director) regular information on the various programs for public recognition of athletic achievements, upcoming events, schedules, and details regarding all sports, including registration
Prepares, submits, and administers a budget each year to fund the athletic, and physical education, and Middle School Health Fair programs
Provides the scheduling of all athletic contests and, in cooperation with the Director of Facilities and Transportation, arranges for athletic transportation
Represents the school as appropriate at various state, regional and national athletic associations and meetings
Provides parent and teacher workshops on science and health related topics, and contributes to the school’s primary publications
In collaboration with other staff, contributes to and ensures the content of collateral materials such as handbooks, curriculum guides, brochures, and web materials remains consistent with current research and practice and these materials are accurate, detailed, and accessible to students, parents, and the community
Maintains records of team and individual athletic accomplishments and submits copies of same to the Development office for historical purposes
Maintains and revises a Coaches' Manual each year and sets up appropriate meetings with the Coaches to review the information and standards in detail
Ensures the health and safety of all students in the physical education and athletic program
Plans and implements an annual weeklong Middle School Health Fair with assistance from the Administrative Assistant to the Middle School Director
Promotes the teaching of health as connected to the Physical Education program
Participates in home room/advisories as assigned, offers Middle School club options, and participates in off-campus field trips
Observes laws and the school’s policies, procedures and regulations which have application to and implication for the professional’s responsibilities
Supports the school and its leadership
Vigorously engages in his/her own professional development
Establishes and cultivates community relations by maintaining open and candid dialogue with all of the school’s constituencies
Since safety and security are everyone’s responsibility, takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, faculty, staff, equipment, materials and facilities
Performs other duties as assigned
Required Education & Experience:
A Bachelor’s Degree, with an emphasis in early childhood, elementary and/or middle school physical education or related areas from a four-year college or university required
Master’s Degree in elementary and/or middle school physical education or related areas preferred
3+ years of combined teaching experience required
Experience in teaching physical education courses at early childhood, elementary and/or middle school level
Experience in developing and writing curriculum, knowledge of current trends and research in learning and assessment, and strong oral and written communication skill
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Expertise in athletics, health and physical education
Familiarity with current learning theories and basic principles of human growth and development and ability to consider them in the design and implementation of learning experiences
Knowledge of current trends and research in learning and assessment
Ability to manage the non-instructional human dynamics in the educational setting
Flexibility and adaptability to meet the needs of the children and program
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Ability to maintain confidential information
Ability to work collaboratively in team situations
Ability to work efficiently in a Microsoft Windows environment using Microsoft Office, master common automated systems for record keeping, and learn new technology
Ability to work and communicate well with all levels of faculty and staff
Ability to work and communicate well with students and their parents
Ability to work outside in all weather
Some travel required (field trips)
A competent level of knowledge and skill in designing and conducting an exemplary instructional experience
Evidence of having theoretical background and knowledge of the principles and methods of teaching
A commitment to education as a profession
A competent level of knowledge and skill in organizing the physical and human elements in the educational setting
Awareness of his/her limitations and strengths and
An understanding of and commitment to each student, taking into account each individual’s unique background and characteristics
Enthusiasm for/enjoyment in working with students
A depth and breadth of knowledge of theory and content in general education and subject matter specialization(s) appropriate to grade level
Ability to relate in a professional manner to students, parents, and educational personnel
Ability to support group processes intended to reach consensus
