Berkeley Carroll is a Pre-K through grade 12 college preparatory school of 980 students located in the Park Slope section of New York City. Our vibrant intellectual community draws students from all over the city, admission to the school is competitive, and both our parents and students value achievement.
The Berkeley Carroll Middle and Upper School divisions seek an inspirational and passionate music teacher. Intelligence, stamina and an abiding passion to make the joy of musical performance accessible to as many students as possible are key qualities. An ideal candidate should have experience teaching and guiding 5th grade novices all the way through the later achievements of a 12th grade musician. Our award-winning musical program starts every fifth grader learning music directly on either a wind or string instrument. Beginning in 7th grade students may opt for another arts elective but the majority of students continue to populate music classes as well as the middle school jazz band and the various ensembles. In upper school there is a high level of enthusiastic participation throughout a similar range of high-level, competitive ensemble and band offerings. In addition to providing oversight of this program, direct teaching of wind instruments might include, for example, teaching winds in grades 5, 7 and 8.
Familiarity is expected with the following range of woodwinds and brass: flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, French horn, euphonium, tuba and percussion.
An advanced degree in music education would be advantageous.
Berkeley Carroll is committed to an inclusive program and a diverse faculty and student body. Candidates with a demonstrated commitment to and experience with diversity, equity or inclusion work are especially encouraged to apply.
Candidates should send a resume, cover letter, references and teaching statement to email@example.com and firstname.lastname@example.org. No phone calls please.
