The Foote School, an independent K-9 co-ed day school, seeks a full-time Chinese teacher. Foote aims to endow students with timeless values while providing the thoughtful experiences that will prepare them to learn, lead, and grow in the 21st century; language study has a key place in this experience.
Introduced in 2012, the Chinese program has become an important part of the school’s modern language offerings as students build their facility with speaking, reading, and writing the language and grow in their appreciation of Chinese culture.
The successful candidate will be a nurturing flexible person with a strong background in Chinese language instruction and an understanding of the developmental needs of children. He or she should be able to communicate effectively with students, parents, and peers as well as be able to employ a variety of instructional techniques to engage young learners. The successful candidate will have a commitment to our school’s mission, to working collaboratively with others, and to upholding the values of the school community. The teacher in this position will likely teach classes in grades 5 through 8 to students who have been building proficiency for a few years. The teacher will serve also as an advisor to a group of 7 to 9 students.

Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree in Chinese and/or education preferred.
Proficiency with standard Mandarin Chinese, both spoken and written, including simplified characters and pinyin
Effective oral and written communication in English
Experience in teaching and language instruction for students ages 10-15
Training in best practices as it relates to teaching a foreign language
An appreciation for independent school education and the middle school years
A willingness to collaborate with others and to contribute to the school community
