Established in 1887, Winchester Thurston School (WT) (www.winchesterthurston.org) is an independent, Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 12, coeducational college preparatory day school in Pittsburgh, PA, serving more than 700 students. The Upper School currently serves 260 students, including 27 international students.
WT seeks an Upper School Dean of Students who will foster an atmosphere conducive to learning and who will oversee all issues pertaining to the well-being of students in grades 9 through 12 during their attendance at school. This includes, but is not limited to, working with student schedules, clubs and activities, conduct, programs, policies and procedures.
The Upper School Dean of Students performs under the general direction of the Head of School and under the daily supervision of the Upper School Director. He/she will make decisions and handle most duties and responsibilities independently, though in accordance with established procedures and policies, and will seek direction from the Upper School Director in unusual or unique situations.
Collaborate with the Upper School team to ensure that students receive applicable academic support, counseling, and testing
Promote high standards and expectations for academic performance, student leadership, personal integrity, and community responsibility
Oversee the work of the grade-level coordinators
Lead and manage all affairs related to student conduct, including routine and major student disciplinary action related to attendance, class tardiness, suspensions, etc.
Oversee student clubs and social activities
Manage the daily schedule, in collaboration with the Upper School Director
Develop and lead a comprehensive overnight 9th grade orientation retreat
Assist the Middle & Upper School Counselor and the Upper and Middle School Directors in developing programs and speakers that address adolescent issues such as drugs, alcohol, sex, mental and physical health, etc.
Maintain communication with students, parents, and administration regarding issues and maintain applicable documentation related to grades, conduct, or other issues
Coordinate new-student orientation
Schedule special programs and events for attendance by the student body such as assemblies, programs, etc.
Collaborate with the Upper School Director to annually review and revise, if applicable, the policies and procedures in the Upper School Student Handbook
Teach a class or direct an activity, if requested
Perform other duties as assigned
Bachelor’s degree and 5+ years of experience in education is required; an advanced degree in an educational field is preferred
Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills
Ability to effectively collaborate and coordinate with students, parents, and colleagues, with a particular emphasis on being a strong student advocate
Demonstrated experience in problem-solving, managing multiple priorities, and meeting deadlines
Excellent skills in verbal land written communications
Be a strong leader while serving as a goal-oriented team member
Must be flexible, possess a sense of humor, and have a willingness to take difficult positions
