The Shipley School, founded in 1894, is a co-educational, college preparatory, independent day school currently enrolling 835 students in grades Pre-K through 12. Located in the western suburbs of Philadelphia, the school is committed to educational excellence and dedicated to developing in each student a love of learning and a compassionate participation in the world. The Upper School has 416 students in grades 9-12, and a faculty of 60.
The Shipley Upper School seeks an experienced educator to lead our STEAM Department and oversee the MakerSpace. The candidate will have a degree in a STEAM field and clear educational philosophy, which is consistent with the mission of the school and of STEAM teaching.
Ensure the MakerSpace is supplied, organized, and safe environment for students and faculty
Demonstrate knowledge of and confidence with all the tools and machines in the Makerspace
Create and share best practices for the equipment in the space
Teach a combination of major (e.g. Computer Science and or Engineering) and minor (e.g. Science Olympiad, Design Thinking, and Robotics) courses within the department.
Create a supportive atmosphere and rigorous academic program in which all students will thrive
Create a learning environment where students will take risks and explore new ideas and work collaboratively
Support the administration in establishing new academic policies and upholding those in place
Work with department members on curricular development, scope and sequence and team work
Serve as a grade level Advisor to students
Degree in a STEAM field preferred
Clear educational philosophy, consistent with the mission of the school
Experience teaching STEAM and managing a MakerSpace at the high school level
Solid experience working with the tools and practices in a MakerSpace including 3D printers, and programming languages.
Clear record of innovative teaching and problem solving
Must be creative, energetic, and positive as he or she encourages, instructs, and evaluates the students in his or her care
