Upland Country Day School, a Preschool through Grade 9 independent school in Kennett Square, PA seeks a Chief Financial Officer (CFO) for July 1 with the ability to start even sooner. Guided by the school's mission and strategic plan, the CFO works closely with the Head of School and the Finance and Buildings and Grounds Committees of the Board of Trustees to develop annual budgets and implement strategies which ensure sound financial and fiscal management of the School's assets and resources. In addition, the CFO directs all procedures of the Business Office, including accounts payable and receivable, all accounting procedures, budgeting, purchasing, and payroll and benefits. The CFO reports to the Head of School. This is a permanent, 12-month position.
The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is responsible for the management, oversight and direction of the following school’s functions: Budgeting and Finance; Human Resources; Technology Infrastructure; and Facilities.
BUDGETING AND FINANCE
Supervise the work of the bookkeeper and use standard accounting and bookkeeping procedures to keep an accurate continuous record of the cash and financial position of the school and manage the financial operation of the school so that the institution remains financially stable.
Prepare a monthly operating statement for the head of school and the board of trustees.
Provide a monthly report of expenditures for use of each individual budget center within the school.
Establish a plan and schedule for the preparation of the annual budget that will permit the setting of the succeeding year’s tuition at a Board of Trustees meeting early in the calendar year.
Provide for the securing of an annual audit of the school’s financial records and financial positions.
Oversee all school purchasing, financial investments, banking activities, payroll and benefits program.
Provide staff support, in conjunction with the head of school, to the Finance Committee and the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees.
Manage risk at the school to ensure the safety of personnel and students in their use of the facilities and to maintain appropriate levels of insurance to protect the property and to cover the liability of the school.
Oversee school transportation, including transportation routes, schedules and contracts and to assess the performance of the transportation companies.
Assist the head of school with decisions regarding salaries and benefits for all personnel, including the evaluation of support staff.
Represent the school at various regional, state, and national associations relative to the role of being the business manager.
Working with the Director of Facilities, the CFO is ultimately responsible to:
Oversee the physical operation of the entire school and its programs.
Create and oversee the careful maintenance and cleaning programs that keep the school’s appearance in exemplary condition.
Oversee and evaluate the work of a buildings and grounds crew.
Create and oversee an on-going equipment replacement program and PPRSM budget.
Develop, maintain and report all required environmental, health and maintenance standards as required by law and to work with the administration, to ensure compliance with all regional, state and federal regulations and laws as they impact the school.
Arrange bids and develop specifications for all outside contractual work of more than $1,000.
Oversee the work of all outside contractors to ensure compliance with contractual agreements and budgetary restrictions.
Serve as staff support for the Buildings and Grounds Committee of the Board of Trustees.
TECHNOLOGY & TECHNOLOGY INFRASTRUCTURE
Working with the Director of Technology, the CFO is ultimately responsible to:
Participate in the development of a technology plan for the school
Develop the school’s computer operating and capital budgets, oversee the purchasing, and install and maintain budgeted items.
Supervise the school’s Director of Technology.
Serve as staff support for the Technology Committee of the Board of Trustees.
Maintain and secure employment files for all personnel.
Ensure that the human resource policies and practices are clearly articulated, consistently applied, and conform to legal requirements.
Qualified candidates will have a minimum of five years’ experience in accounting, finance, facilities, and human resources, preferably in an independent school or nonprofit organization. Candidates should demonstrate strong organizational and problem-solving skills; the ability to motivate, direct and train staff, as well as excellent interpersonal, collaborative, and communication skills.
