Rockland Country Day School, an independent Pre-K-12 school in Congers, NY, seeks a full time, English teacher, able and eager to teach grades 9-12. The RCDS faculty is innovative and collaborative and seeks a candidate to complement the strengths of the middle and upper schools and to add his or her own expertise and background to provide additional breadth to the core curriculum.
Overall goals and responsibilities of the Grades 9-12 English program include the development of logical reasoning, coherence and clarity, and presentation of ideas in a formal style to develop an appreciation for prose and poetry, both historical and modern. Students take notes in the Cornell style and then come to class prepared to discuss themes including civilization, alienation, maturity, anxiety, friendship, family, revolution, the individual versus society, guilt and responsibility. Ultimately, these notes and discussions form the basis of their academic writing. Students learn to structure their essays and cite their evidence in accordance with MLA format. Students also engage in extensive brainstorming, outlining, drafting, re-writing, and peer review sessions.
Faculty are expected to:
Design/refine a differentiated and globally integrated curriculum which includes project-based, student-driven units, and incorporates adventurous out-of-box thinking using digital communication and content integration.
Assign related coursework and track student performance; evaluate programs and student progress
Assume personal responsibility for student achievement by managing the classes and ensuring student engagement and discipline
Communicate with parents in an appropriate and timely manner
Collaborate with colleagues in meetings and on an individual and cross-curricular basis
Act as an advisor to assigned students and participate in club, elective, and after-school student and school-wide activities.
Candidates should possess the ability and willingness to work with students in large and small group settings using multiple teaching methods to reach a broad range of students.
In addition to a strong academic content background and 4 year degree in English from an accredited institution of higher education, the ideal candidate has a Master’s degree and is an experienced independent school teacher. The incumbent should also be committed to issues of diversity, leadership, inclusion, and equity.
Bachelor's degree in English from an accredited institution of higher education
Advanced degree in a literary discipline - preferred
A passion for working with young people
A desire to collaborate in a dynamic community of teachers
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Experience in working with upper school students in an academic setting.
Experience in course design, planning, and implementation.
