Working closely with the academic leadership team, the Learning Specialist will design and lead programs to serve students, faculty and parents in the TMI community. The ideal candidate will have experience working with students who have diverse learning abilities and needs, collaborating with teachers on providing differentiated instruction particularly in reading, writing, and math, and implementing instructional strategies. The position requires excellent collaborative and communication skills, a flexible and positive attitude, and a track record of developing positive relationships with students, parents, and colleagues.
Candidates should have general familiarity with college prep curricula; knowledge about a range of learning disabilities (e.g., dyslexia, dyscalculia, dysgraphia, etc.), health impairments (e.g., ADHD), test anxiety, and general executive functioning challenges and their impact on learning; the ability to individualize instruction and strategies for improving reading, writing and mathematical problem solving; the ability to help students implement effective study, organizational, time management and planning skills and tools; familiarity with student learning profiles, needs, and academic goals; and the capacity to relate to, establish rapport with and motivate students to succeed, become self-advocates, and take advantage of resources and support.
Support 6th to 12th-grade students in meeting expected academic goals
Provide one-on-one and small-group support/instruction for students with identified learning challenges, both in push-in and pull-out environments
Teach one literacy support class
Teach one English language learner support class
Make regular assessments of student achievement and progress
Report data to administration, teachers and parents on student achievement and progress
Attend Parent-Teacher Conferences to discuss progress with parents, if required
Facilitate Power Hour support for students before and after school
Read and summarize all psychoeducational testing for Middle and Upper School and for Admissions as needed
Counsel families on opportunities for learning support, available resources and interventions
Support teaching staff by offering resources, assistance, advice, and training to enable faculty to better meet the needs of all learners.
Develop and maintain communication and documentation protocols related to learning support.
Administer and analyze literacy and math assessments
Observe and evaluate individual students displaying academic or behavioral difficulties and assess their learning strengths and challenges.
Master’s degree in Education and demonstrated teacher leadership experience in meeting the needs of diverse learners
At least three years of experience as a learning specialist or in a related role. Independent school experience preferred.
Familiarity with NCTM and NCTE standards
Full understanding of differentiated instructional strategies across the curriculum
Ability to collaborate with faculty, staff, admin, and parents
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, verbally and in writing
