Lakeside School, an independent 5-12 coeducational day school located in North Seattle is currently recruiting for Jazz Band Teacher. This appointment is a.25 FTE appointment.

The jazz band teacher will join a vibrant Upper School community and a strong arts department which consists of thirteen performing and visual arts faculty members, some of whom work in both divisions. The jazz band teacher leads an auditioned ensemble comprised of students in 9th through 12th grade, and employs best practices in jazz pedagogy. The music program is well supported and includes funding for coaches, guest artists, and on-campus private lessons supported by financial aid. Specific responsibilities for this position include:
Teach one section of jazz band at the Upper School and oversee all aspects of planning, auditions, and administrative duties related to the jazz band.
Meet 3 days per week: Monday and Friday 10:05 a.m. - 10:50 a.m., and Wednesday 9:35 a.m. - 10:50 a.m., and the total time commitment is 10 hours per week on campus.
Collaborate with the music team, present 3-4 concerts per school year; participate in the annual music retreat.
Coordinate with the music team to align curricula, select repertoire, and continuously improve pedagogical practices.
Recruit and lead a team of coaches to supplement instruction and achieve excellent results.
Evaluate student growth though current reporting systems (comments and grades).
Provide support for students outside of class time as needed.
Communicate with students, parents/guardians and colleagues.
Attend some arts department and faculty meetings to stay connected with the school community.

A Bachelor’s degree in music/music education; a master’s degree is preferred but not required.
Experience teaching jazz is required as is demonstrated appreciation for teaching high school age students.
Collaborate meaningfully with other faculty is essential.
Work with students who vary in ability and learning styles, have experience instructing diverse populations of students.
Excellent rehearsal skills, and have an extensive knowledge of jazz repertoire for student ensembles.
References should address the candidate's ability to work independently, be collaborative, successfully instruct a wide range of students, and work with other adults in a high functioning and innovative educational setting.
Demonstrated cultural awareness, including knowledge of themselves and the cultural lenses they bring to interactions. The candidate will understand different perspectives; interact respectfully with cultures other than their own; and cultivate meaningful relationships with people that have different cultural frameworks.
Candidates must satisfactorily complete two criminal background checks.
