Position Description: WRUS Director of Development
Wye River Upper School (WRUS) seeks a Director of Development effective immediately. WRUS is a small accredited independent high school supporting the strengths and needs of bright high school students with learning differences. We focus on raising annual funds and financial aid to provide this educational experience for students and their families who need the education we provide but can not afford the tuition. WRUS is located in a historically renovated 1926 National Guard Armory, in lovely Centreville MD on Maryland’s beautiful Eastern Shore. Our current enrollment is 53 with a target enrollment of 65.
The person who holds this position has the opportunity to positively impact all aspects of the school through near and long term planning and actions to raise fiscal resources through a collaboration with peers, Trustees and donors. The Director of Development will report to the Head of School and indirectly to the Board of Trustees. It is a full time position and is an administrative leadership role. There is a support staff to assist this position.
The ideal candidate/position will demonstrate a strong appreciation for the Mission and impact of WRUS. He or she must be an outstanding communicator and demonstrate superb interpersonal skills. This person must be a team player and open to learning and engaging with most facets of the school. Ideally this person will demonstrate success with managing a major gifts campaign.
Responsibilities include but may not be limited to:
To embrace and articulate with passion and frequency the unique mission of Wye River Upper School
To design and manage, in collaboration with the Head of School, Board of Trustees and Development Committee, a development plan that includes a range of revenue sources including major gifts, annual fund, grants, foundation relations and planned giving.
To develop an annual giving program that educates constituents and involves them in peer-to-peer solicitation;
To oversee, with support of staff and volunteers, the production of one major biennial fundraising event
To coordinate along with Board and HOS a going campaign to reduce or eliminate mortgage.
To develop a plan to increase alumni, parent, and grandparent support of, and involvement in, the institution;
To create a regular, coordinated communication strategy for outreach to the school’s donors and prospective donors;
To oversee use of and production through eTapestry or designated fundraising platform in order to maximize fundraising campaigns.
To identify and cultivate prospective and current donors using a variety of tools and media; to recognize and arrange for key solicitors, including the HOS and identified Trustees, to complete solicitations and to be involved in follow through.
To be knowledgeable and skilled in the use of a range of social media in order to advance the goals and actions of the Development Plan
To be able to identify human interest stories within the school and be able to document those stories in oral, written and visual form and to disseminate them across a range of communication platforms
To inform the Executive Director and appropriate board committees on a consistent basis of all development activities
To produce analytical reports and consult with the Executive Director and Board Development Committee of the Board regarding improving all fundraising campaigns.
To seek professional development for the purpose of staying current with development initiatives;
To perform other development duties as assigned by the Head of School.
