The Outdoor Academy is an accredited, residential, semester school for high achieving tenth-grade and select ninth- and eleventh-grade students. Rising from a long tradition of experiential education at Eagle's Nest Foundation, a non-profit organization chartered in 1950, The Outdoor Academy incorporates a college preparatory curriculum with environmental education, wilderness leadership, unique arts offerings, and regional studies in a small community setting. Established in 1995, The Outdoor Academy enrolls up to 28 students from across the United States each semester to attend our school located in Pisgah Forest, North Carolina.
The Outdoor Education Manager (OEM) is responsible for the oversight of all wilderness programs and staff for The Outdoor Academy (OA). This oversight includes training and evaluation of staff. The OEM works closely with the OA Director on the continual implementation, risk assessment and management, evaluation and design of quality programs at The Outdoor Academy. The OEM will serve on the Administrative Council of OA. The OEM will work closely with the OA Director and Eagle’s Nest Camp Assistant Director on plans and budgeting for wilderness programs at OA and help guide the risk management policies for OA and ENF. The OEM is responsible to and supervised by the OA Director. The OEM is expected to integrate with community life at OA including meals, community meetings, and other duties as available.
RESPONSIBILITIES – OEM
Follow and institute all plans for safety and risk management as outlined in the Eagle’s Nest Foundation Employee Handbook, Eagle’s Nest Foundation Faculty and Staff Manual and OA Faculty Handbook.
Work with the Eagle’s Nest Camp Assistant Camp Director to ensure standardization of risk management procedures across the Foundation and smooth transition between the programs, program areas and program equipment and supplies in the fall and spring.
Train all Residential Wilderness Educators and Faculty on Outdoor Academy wilderness policies and procedures before each semester. The OEM will also lead an all wilderness faculty refresher trip at the beginning of the school year.
Design and teach an Outdoor Education curriculum and coordinate with all faculty to integrate outdoor skills and leadership across the curriculum.
Serve as part of the back-up administrative team while students are in the field, if not in the field.
In conjunction with the Assistant Camp Director, create and monitor the OA wilderness equipment budget.
Educate trip staff and faculty in risk management. Ensure proper certifications of staff for each trip out. Track and report on all Incidents and Accidents that happen each semester to the Risk Management Committee.
Maintain any special wilderness and river permits for OA. Track and submit OA User Days for Pisgah, Nantahala National Forests, Dupont State Forest and Nantalaha Rivers to the Assistant Camp Director.
Maintain any special permissions or release forms needed for students and staff for any wilderness trips off campus.
Be ultimately responsible for the overall transportation and vehicle needs of the school.
Be responsible for training and testing all staff on the proper use of vehicles.
Be in charge of managing the calendar for programs leaving campus.
With Property Manager, be responsible for readiness of all program vehicles, van safety and weekly van maintenance checks. Make sure that vehicles have gas, oil, transmission fluid, brake fluid, lights, first aid kits, emergency equipment, all emergency numbers and are in safe and clean condition.
Maintain safety standards for all off campus transportation.
Be responsible for keys, gas credit cards, and receipts being returned in a timely fashion.
Ensure all equipment for OA is maintained, is in good working order and meets appropriate safety standards. Keep inventory of all OA wilderness equipment. Oversee inventory of the Sun Lodge equipment rooms. In coordination with the Assistant Camp Director, order all OA wilderness Equipment.
In cooperation with the Admissions Director, update program literature that relates to the wilderness and OE programs. This includes portions of the curriculum guide, viewbook, website, and resources for wilderness programs and for curriculum for OE.
Assist the Assistant Camp Director in managing Pro Deals for the OA Faculty.
Supervise any other outdoor education components of The Outdoor Academy including but not limited to:
In cooperation with the OA Director, create wilderness program calendar.
Work with medical coordinator to review medical forms, discuss First Aid supply needs, medical kits, etc. with trip leaders.
Supervise Residents in all aspects of outdoor education and wilderness programming.
Supervise logistics/debriefs and for all wilderness trips and weekends.
Whether physically in the field or not, act as a lead instructor for all treks and paddle/climb weekends.
Participate in teaching and instruction (professional development days) on campus and in the field with Residential Wilderness Educators and faculty.
Oversee the arrangement of transportation of all OA trips in conjunction with Residential Wilderness Educators and / or OA faculty.
Ensure that all OA faculty and ENF staff on site have up-to-date CPR, First Aid and Driver Information on file. Submit driver information to the insurance company and compile an approved driver list before employee drives ENF vehicle(s).
As a senior administrator, attend weekly meetings and Serve as Administrator on Duty approximately one week per month.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND SCHEDULE
The majority of work will be conducted on campus; however, off-site work in the outdoors supervising teenagers will occur several times each semester. The ability to work long days in hot and/or cold environments and lift heavy gear and boxes is required. Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed to fulfill program demands.

B.A. or B.S. in a related field, or prior work experience in education
Experience with Risk Management
Experience with staff supervision and wilderness program logistics
Wilderness First Responder required; Wilderness EMT desirable
Experience in and enthusiasm for working with and teaching students in experiential education, wilderness, or residential settings
Well-developed planning and organizational skills
Strong public speaking capabilities and refined communication skills
Proficiency in both Microsoft Office and Google G-Suite platforms
A clean driving record
