Lower School Reading/Learning Specialist, 4th and 5th Grade

The 4th- and 5th-Grade Learning Specialist works to support students in both grades with the acquisition of reading and writing skills. The Learning Specialist works with students in small groups, joins classrooms, and performs some individualized instruction. This passionate, self-motivated professional will join the Student Support Team, assuming the role of supporting students and faculty, as well as coordinating curriculum throughout these grades.
Work with students through one-on-one instruction and in small groups, in close collaboration with the students’ classroom teachers.
Plan lessons for students; tailor instruction to meet the groups’ needs; and support the classroom scope and sequence.
Act as a mentor to faculty; facilitate curriculum planning; and lead discussions about individual students.
Meet regularly with the psychologist and classroom teachers to create and implement interventions to support students’ learning and behavioral needs.
Participate and assist in facilitating Child Study Team Meetings; present student concerns; and determine an action plan.
Meet regularly with the Division Director and Student Support Team.
Coordinate with outside support specialists.
Participate in parent and support specialist meetings.
Keep detailed records of student progress and write short reports (which will be included in student academic reports).
Coordinate prep for CTP testing and ensure that students receive any necessary accommodations.
Master’s Degree in Literacy or Special Education and at least three years of experience teaching reading
Experience with Guided Reading, TC Reading and Writing Workshop, Fountas and Pinnell, Writing Revolution (Hochman Method), and a variety of word study/vocabulary instruction programs
Experience working with classroom teachers; ability to collaborate with and mentor colleagues
Experience in inquiry-based learning and teaching methodologies
Develop curriculum in conjunction with grade-level teams and modify it based on the needs of the small group
Able to teach to a range of learning styles; experience in differentiated instruction
Interest in the development and implementation of social and emotional curriculum, as well as social justice, diversity, and inclusivity
Excellent written and verbal skills
Interest in professional growth and schoolwide initiatives
Curiosity, flexibility, energy, and a sense of humor
