Founded in 1858, Shattuck-St. Mary’s School (SSM) is an Episcopal, co-educational, college preparatory, independent boarding/day school serving 500 students in grades 6th-postgraduate from 37 states and over 30 countries. Set on a beautiful 250-acre campus south of Minneapolis/St. Paul in Minnesota, SSM offers a mix of traditional and progressive education. PURPOSE: SSM is seeking a Director to continue to develop and grow its Center of Excellence in Engineering into a nationally notable program. In addition to their traditional core academic classes, students in the Engineering COE devote two full class periods each day to work in Engineering. In the classroom and lab students are introduced to computer modeling, programming, and learning how to work with woods, metals, and composites. Advanced course offerings include digital circuits, mechanics of materials, machine design, thermodynamics, introduction to architecture, and more. Students apply their knowledge and explore possible careers paths through work on individual projects. SSM’s Engineering COE offers students the opportunity for hands-on learning using 3-D printing, a laser cutter, light metal fabrication and woodworking, and virtual reality work stations.
This position is ideal for a highly motivated individual who is excited to teach, mentor students working on independent projects, and develop curriculum in a boarding school environment. Candidates with industry experience who are looking to make a career change are welcome. In addition to teaching and curriculum development, the Director of Engineering is expected to help promote our Engineering COE through outreach to industry and to educational institutions in the region. The Director also assists the admission office with recruiting and oversees one teacher who works in the COE.
CANDIDATE PROFILE: •Master’s degree in Engineering or other relevant fields preferred. •Experience teaching in a classroom setting as well mentoring and coaching students working on independent projects. •Excellent formal and informal presentations skills. •Interest in teaching and working in an innovative educational environment. •Industry experience in relevant fields preferred.
