Lower School Head Teachers are an integral part of the faculty at The Cathedral School. K – 2 Head Teachers work collaboratively with an Associate Teacher in the classroom. 3rd Grade Head Teachers lead their classes on their own with support from the 3rd Grade Academic Support teacher and 3rd – 5th Grade Learning Specialist.
Lower School Head Teachers are responsible for all classroom duties, both academic and organizational. These responsibilities include: planning and teaching curriculum, facilitating classroom management procedures, observing and assessing students’ progress, and communicating with parents, faculty, and administration. Head Teachers are responsible for keeping support staff abreast of students’ progress.
Lower School Head Teachers facilitate parent-teacher conferences and prepare written comments that are mailed home twice a year. They attend faculty meetings, grade level meetings, and confer with colleagues regarding teaching and strategies. Head Teachers have lunch, recess, and porch duty responsibilities. Since Kindergarten is also an entry point for new students at the Cathedral School, Kindergarten teachers are valuable members of the Admission Team. Head teachers take turns participating in child visit playgroups and other admission events as needed.
Lower School Head Teachers are responsible for completing a Meaning Faculty Evaluation plan and working on these goals with the Division Head. They are responsible for informing the Division Head of supplies that need to be ordered for the classroom. In the event of a known absence, Head Teachers need to leave appropriate lesson plans for the Associate or substitute teacher.
Head Teachers need to be attuned to the needs of their students. In support of The Cathedral School's mission, they must be prepared to view curriculum and classroom and school culture through a lens focused on equity and justice. A nurturing and caring personality is essential.
