The Speyer Legacy School, an independent K-8 school for accelerated learners in Manhattan, seeks a debate teacher and debate team coach. Speyer teachers are expected to be creative, collaborative, and responsive to student needs, even as they also address essential pedagogical challenges and skills to enhance student learning and achievement.
The Debate Coach/Instructor reports to both the Lower School and Middle School Heads. This is a faculty position, with primary responsibilities in teaching and coaching debate. Other responsibilities, such as faculty duties and elective teaching, will be determined by the Head of the Middle School.
Specific responsibilities of the debate teacher/coach include, but are not limited to, the following:
Teach debate once every other week to grades K, 1, and 2.
Teach debate once a week to grades 3 and 4.
Teach Debate once a week to students in grades 5-8.
Check in monthly with the Lower and Middle School Heads to discuss curriculum, interdisciplinary initiatives, and participation in culminating events.
Attend and participate in Lower School specialist meetings in alternation with middle school child study meetings.
Respond to parents, colleagues, and division heads in person or via phone or email in a timely manner.
Write brief comments for Lower and Middle School report cards.
Submit a written curriculum to the Lower and Middle school division heads for their advice.
Provide coaching for the Debate Team after school for four days each week.
Coach or provide coverage for weekend debate tournaments.
