University Prep is seeking a talented, engaging and compassionate Middle and Upper School Visual Art & Stagecraft Teacher to help us advance our vision of being an inclusive community of learners that provides an outstanding education for each individual in a diverse student population. We need a leader who understands best practices in a variety of visual art classes, as well as stagecraft design, set construction, and shop safety. We are also seeking someone who is passionate about teaching to middle and high school students and enhancing student life. The position would also offer the opportunity for the successful applicant to teach two courses of stagecraft each semester, as well as semester and/or three-week intensive courses, with possibilities in visual art, video production, engineering/STEAM, or other subjects that best fit the applicant’s experience and expertise. We are looking for someone who can work effectively independently as well as part of a team.

Under minimal supervision, teaches two sections total of Middle and Upper School stagecraft classes each semester, as well as additional to-be-determined classes in the semester and/or 3-week Intensive period. Serves as a student advisor.
Teaches a variety of Middle and Upper School Visual Art courses, which may include traditional media (drawing, painting, and mixed media), film/video, sculpture, engineering, or other courses in either the semester or Intensive periods.
Teaches Middle School Stagecraft, Upper School Stagecraft, and one additional course each semester and/or Intensive.
Advises a group of 8-10 students
Actively participates in the life of the school outside the classroom
Vigorously engages in his/her own professional development
Establishes and cultivates community relations by maintaining open dialogue with all of the school’s constituencies
Is familiar with and complies with all policies and regulations as put forth in the schools documents
Since safety and security are everyone’s responsibility, takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, faculty, staff, equipment, materials and facilities
Performs other duties as assigned
Required Education & Experience:
Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts, Theatre, or a related field from a four-year college or university required
Master's degree in a related field or education preferred
Teaching certification preferred
3+ years of successful teaching experience in a secondary school environment preferred
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Competence in the content area and pedagogy for secondary school
Demonstrated experience in set design and construction
Experience with operating Audio/Visual equipment
Experience or interest in Makerspaces as learning environments
Good understanding of the developmental needs of secondary school students
Flexibility and adaptability to meet the needs of the students and program
Energy and enthusiasm and ability to hold students and oneself to high expectations
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Ability to work with students from diverse backgrounds
Ability to create an active learning environment that supports understanding, passion and creativity in students
Ability to prepare lessons to appeal to a variety of learning styles, needs and accommodations
Ability to use formative assessments and strategies in the classroom
Deep interest in being part of a community as a colleague and grade-level team member
Experience being part of a curricular and co-curricular team preferred
Ability to work and communicate well with all levels of faculty and staff
Ability to work and communicate well with students and their parents
Ability to maintain confidential information
Flexibility, maturity and a sense of humor
Ability to work efficiently in a Microsoft Windows or Mac environment using Office, master common automated systems for record keeping, and learn new technologies
Ability and interest in coaching and/or working in our outdoor program is a plus
