The Urban School of San Francisco seeks an experienced Controller for the daily management of accounting operations to ensure strong fiscal controls and accurate financial reporting. The School’s budget is $19M and the endowment is $11.5M. The ideal candidate will be nimble and have a high degree of integrity, accuracy, and detailed finance and accounting experience.
Manages the accounting systems of the school, including general ledger, budget, payroll and benefits, fixed assets and endowment. Provides accurate and timely financial, management and governmental reports.
Oversees the preparation of Urban School’s audited financial statements and IRS 990 tax return.
Monitors the annual operating budget for accuracy and ensures monthly reports are communicated in a timely manner to departments. Identifies and analyzes variances and develops appropriate solutions and/or recommendations. Helps to prepare the monthly reporting package for the Board of Trustees.
Manages all bank accounts, investment accounts, cash and related assets of Urban School. Reports and monitors investment performance. Prepares monthly bank reconciliations for all school accounts.
Develops, documents and maintains appropriate accounting and financial procedures, including effective and thorough use of accounting software (Financial Edge). Serves as the in-house accounting software expert, maintaining the system, ensuring upgrades are completed in a timely manner, and assisting other users.
Provides hands-on management and is responsible for the general ledger, accounts receivable (student billing and collection of tuition and fees), accounts payable, purchasing card transactions, and fixed assets along with assistance from the business office staff. Manages receivables and payables for ancillary services such as transportation and food service.
Works with the Development Office to reconcile Raiser’s Edge contribution records with Financial Edge.
Ensures compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, tax filings, professional standards and internal policies.
Develops accounting and funds management policies and procedures to insure adequate financial controls, audit trails and security in conjunction with the CFO.
Manages and mentors the staff accountant.
Demonstrated track record of identifying and implementing process improvements to streamline operations and better serve internal customer needs.

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting; CPA license highly desired
Non-profit accounting experience
7-10 years of proven accounting experience in an accounting management position
Knowledge of Financial Edge (required) and excellent command of Excel, Work, and PowerPoint
Excellent organizational and time management skills; demonstrated track record of working in a fast-paced environment with ability to prioritize key deliverables
Ability to take initiative, solve problems, and multi-task within a lean environment
Strong oral and written communication skills; thrives in a team environment
