The School: Founded in 1911, Columbus Academy is a coeducational college preparatory day school of over 1,100 students age 3 through grade 12 located on a 231-acre campus in Gahanna, Ohio. Student programs are organized into three divisions: Lower School (age 3-grade 5), Middle School (grades 6-8) and Upper School (grades 9-12). The school offers a vigorous academic program as part of its mission to educate the whole child – mind, body and character. The Position: Columbus Academy seeks a full-time Middle/Upper School Health and Wellness Education Teacher with responsibilities to begin August 1, 2019.
Position Expectations (the individual selected to this position will be expected to carry out the following responsibilities):
Teach in multiple grades with an awareness of the developmental needs of pre-adolescent and adolescent children
Coordinate with counselors and other administrators to review and update health curriculum cross-divisionally
Collaborate with departmental colleagues on schoolwide wellness initiatives, curriculum design and development
Provide periodic updates to parents about student progress, via both written reports and in-person conferences
Hold students accountable for Columbus Academy’s standards of behavior
Assume a share of supervisory responsibilities expected of all faculty members
Work with others in the school community to support each student’s emotional well-being
Demonstrate positive leadership
Physical Conditions (candidates must be able to manage the following conditions):
Mobility around school buildings and on different floors (handicap accessible)
Periodic need to move light furniture, hang visuals in classroom, carry objects (no more than 40 pounds), etc.
Ability to manage a non-smoking environment

Qualifications (preferred candidates will possess the following qualifications):
Bachelor’s degree or higher in health, physical education or a closely related field
Passion for teaching and mentoring students
Knowledge of varied pedagogy and trends in developmentally appropriate health and wellness education for students between the ages of 11-18
Leadership qualities to inspire, motivate and develop students
A reflective practitioner, committed to a continuous process of self-improvement and lifelong learning
Enthusiasm, a positive sense of humor, self-confidence, and effective oral and written communication skills
Demonstrated cultural awareness, including knowledge of themselves and the cultural lens they bring to interactions
